From the various shipbuilding threads I've been researching rigging is a great compromise.  Attempting to duplicate authentic line configurations looks beautiful but is time consuming and can cause problems with playability.  The easiest game friendly solution seems to be with furled sails to keep them from interfering with the models on deck but seeing a full rigged ship under sail seems too majestic to let it go that easily.  I'm interested to see what your choice is especially if you choose the latter because I'd like to know how much cursing is involved :) .

When it comes to making terrain, play-ability is one of my key concerns. A piece of terrain can look absolutely amazing, but if you have difficulty standing models on it's uneven surface or reaching into the terrain piece of position models, then your terrain piece can interfere with the flow and enjoyment of the game.

As you noted, unfurled sail and realistic rigging makes for a handsome model, but it's a poor design for this type of wargamming.  As such, my plan is to model the sails furled and not go overboard on the rigging.

When I made sailing vessels I had sails down, and no more than four lines for rigging, just to give the 'effect'.
a mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice.

I don't think I have any pics of my dhows I made, I'll check. If I do they're on an old hard drive.

Looking good.

I'd call that Goldilocks rigging - not too much, not too little - just right.

Thanks.

The plan is to attach a furled sail to the boom and the headstay and leave it at that.

That looks great to me, should be easy enough to work around and will help keep the masts where they need to be :)

Once my nifty new bases arrive, I can get to work on painting my pirates. .

Thanks.

Here's something that future captains might find useful.  I used black elastic for my rigging.  It's cheap and readily available (I purchased it from the craft/sewing section of a department store).  It stretches, so it a bit more forgiving of big clumsy hands reaching into the ship to move around models.  Also, you can make your rigging taut by connecting it to two points under a small amount tension.  I don't know yet how it takes primer and paint.  I'm on the fence as to whether I'm going to paint my rigging, but if I decide to I'll have to report back to you on this.

Just found this thread. (Not a FG player) Wonderful. Exactly what captivates me about this hobby.
