My drakkar for a horse! – Argad AAR
« on: November 03, 2015, 08:21:03 PM »
Um, yes I know, the name "drakkar" is not correct (invention of 19th C. French scholars for a Viking longship) but it's so practical…

A Viking game we played last Saturday at a local club near Lorient (Brittany).
There were 6 players (3 Vikings and 3 defenders). Ruleset : « Argad ! »

The Vikings had to pillage the village (to search the houses and pens for barrels and farm animals); the defenders had to carry away their barrels and animals, and kill as many Vikings as possible.

Somewhere near the coast (probably in Brittany)…

A child has just seen three Viking ships landing on the beach: people run out of the vilage, taking their cattle with them!

The invaders walk in three groups…

…a few defenders come hastily from a nearby watchtower and try to delay them:

A courageous Viking javelinman runs towards the local bowmen…

…who quickly recoil to protect themselves behind a small group of spearmen; this allows the right flank of the Viking troops to form a shield-wall and continue to advance.

The Viking central troop is searching the village:

On the other side of the valley, the third Viking troop advances in small woods. The (real) sunlight shines on the battlefield…

Some cavalry, alerted by a fire light by the watchtower guards, enter table!

The Viking right flank leader, fearing to be outflanked by cavalry, decides to break the shield wall and to run back, pursued by a handful of local warriors on foot…

…who don't insist when the Vikings reform between the village and the coast.

The Vikings see a few sheep and barrels in the nearest pen; they say they cannot leave them there; their right flank advances again (view from the Viking side):

The Vikings collect the last barrels and sheep they can reach.

On the other side of the village the situation is very different: fighting in small woods, the Viking left flank had slowly suffered many casualties from peasants and slingers.

"A horse, my drakkar for a horse!" Wounded, the Viking left flank commander seizes a wandering horse (who was amongst the farm animals) and mounts it… but he is killed just before he can ride away.

Impressive be good to have a close up of the ship?

I'm not sure where our friend bought it from.
