Instead of downloading the whole of Chain Reaction, it might be worth you downloading the Dog Soldiers scenario. It's designed as an intro to the CR/2HW mechanics, and all you need to play is 5 figures to represent the squaddies, 5 to represent the werewolves, a plan of the house and the shed, some trees and a vehicle to represent the Landrover. It should give you an idea of whether the mechanics are suited to you.

I'm not a fan of THW rules either.  Nuts! was hard to sort out & caused me to write my own skirmish game instead.

.... but I agree with Mahon, in fact he wrote almost exactly what I would have done.

I love their rules systems because I can play them solo, but i can see where others might find them not to their taste.

As others have said, try a free game, most of the mechanics will be similar to 5150. If you don't like it, then fair enough, there are plenty of other options  :)
