Argonor's Colonial Calamities
« on: November 09, 2015, 09:13:44 PM »
It had to happen at some point. I have been bitten by the Victorian/Colonial bug.  ;D

Not much to report, yet, but I have acquired some light reading:

Progress will be tracked here, and, as always, in more detail on my blog.

There are a lot of great games to be played.  Good to have you aboard.

Give up all hope :'(

You are lost to the power of the "Call of Colonials."

Sit back, collect figures, play games and enjoy your new addiction!  :?

Addicted since 1979.  lol

Well, that's more or less what I've been doing all along - just widening the area of operations with this.  lol

Boy those books look familiar.  lol
Are you planning on painting British, Boers and Zulu? Most of my British are Empress and warlord plastics but there are a lot of great figure lines available for this time period.

The truth is, I haven't read any of those books, but they look like a great introduction to one of the most fascinating conflicts in a fascinating period. I've always felt certain pulp feel works well with Colonials, and so would guess the IHMN supplement would be a good choice. Happy reading!

Yes, I am going to start out making skirmish companies/warbands, mainly focussing on British and Zulus, but as the Boers fought both alongside and against the British, as well as against the Zulus, it just makes sense to me to also have them included as an option along the way.

The first Brits I am going to paint are a box of WGF British Infantry I got as a freebie when preordering a box of their Caesarean Romans back in those days, and I am not going to spend much time on them, as the minis simply are not up to par, but they should well enough as assegai-fodder  ;)

I haven't got the IHMN rulebook, yet, but I like the option of crossing over to VSF/Steampunk for more tongue-in-the-cheek action on the tabletop.

I do plan on also using Pulp Alley, and paint up Leagues for other African nations/tribes (probably even including more fantasy-esque cannnibals, and pygmies)

So, the general idea is to build up slowly and get some games going to keep getting inspiration for painting more stuff.

As always, I have several other unfinished projects going on, that I return to every now and then, so I am rarely focussing effectively on any one period/genre at a time, but I think that I'll be mainly focussing on Africa and Old/Weird West this winter, both being set in the same timeframe, so that some stuff may be useable for both settings.

Look for Brian Smaller's posts and Nevermores post (one from today) for more great eye candy of various Zulu and British forces.

Been - slowly - assembling the first sprue's worth of Wargames Factory Zulu War Bitish Infantry.

Not the best of sculpts - especially the shooting stances are... doubtful, at best, but with a reasonable paintjob, I think they will do fine as the afore-mentioned assegai-fodder  ;)

Long time no progress, but I have landed a good deal on some Zulu War stuff today.

This is some of it:

More stuff on my blog!

I expect to start assembling some married Zulus during next week, although a rather extensive garden project is sucking up most of my spare time as the summer seems to continue, which means I have to get as much done as possible before autumn sets in, and the soil becomes all muddy.

Yeah, well, I hope to at least get a handful of Zulus prepped and painted before my butterfly syndrome kicks in, and I get attracted by something else (speaking of which, I still have 1½ Viking to paint for my first 'historical' Blood Eagle warband...)

Not much to show, but I did do a little work today, before the sun whisked me away to toil in the garden (and I have a sunburned back to show for it)-

Hopefully, I shall prep two more bodies, and finish building these two tomorrow. I think I am going to do the Zulus one sprue (4 minis) at a time, prepping, priming, and painting all four before I begin work on the next sprue. That way I should not be bogged down with prepping minis, and I should be able to keep focus long enough for getting an IHMN Impi ready for the table. I think.
