Building a Bestiary
« on: November 13, 2015, 03:49:47 AM »
Hey folks, I've been lurking here a while, and had previously seen a suggested list of minis to cover the most probable stuff you'd need for wandering/scenario-based monsters, but I cannot seem to find it.  Can anyone point me back in that direction, or if not suggest a breakdown of stuff to buy/build?

Thanks!

First of all welcome.

Wandering monsters are an optional rule apart from specific creatures required for certain scenarios - see Awesome Adams scenery thread for a breakdown.

Most people seem to have either gone with what they already have in their collections, or what models they want or can get their hands on. Then you could come up with your own random encounters table to match what you have avalable, even using "counts as" to be able to field other creatures you might have which are not yet covered in the rules.

My own are a mixture of repurposed toy animals and monsters from Heroquest. Between them they cover most of the wandering creatures in the first bestiary at least one, and in some cases up to a dozen times. What I don't have I may get in time, or I may just skip and roll again as I've not gone to the effort to make my own random table to avoid the few I'm lacking.

Hope that helps.

I use what I can get, some from my old D&D stuff and some from cheap shops/offers. This time of year Halloween stuff is sold off very cheaply, e.g. a big bag of insects/ Arachnids / grubs & scorpions set me back £1. It has provided plenty of giant:-
Ants; Spiders; maggots & Scorpions. All have seen action in my Frostgrave (set in a long lost Egyptian city as well as Pulp Alley, 1950s B movies & Back of Beyond games.
