Getting figures for the Texan war of independance
« on: November 18, 2015, 07:21:34 AM »
Not too long ago I swapped some figures for a bunch of Perry Napoleonic french but I've since decided for reasons of space and money not to play Napoleonic's. However, I have been tossing up converting the infantry into Mexicans as I have the LOTOW Alamo book and it's a pretty cool period. I'm fairly handy with green stuff so I am fine to add sandles, mustachios, the occasional wide brimmed hat and  take shoes off etc. Has anyone attempted this or anything similar before?

As for opponents, I have some Empress NZ wars militia that fit the bill but could I also get away with using some Confederates or am I now really pushing the envelope!  :D

Sounds challenging - but doable (there will be a bit of greenstuff). I'll bring a uniform book from the Alamo museum to the LoA next month you can have a look through.

Thankyou Von Lucky that would be very helpful indeed, I also didn't realise you had been.

Cheers for the link, that site is packed full of alot of great info and pictures that will definitely come in handy. It's also a great range of figures full of character, I'm just wondering though how they will fit with with Perry and Hicks sculpts I already have, they seem quite chunkier but are they 28mm?

Thanks again

They are indeed.  If you have any specific scale or comparison queries, just PM Malamute on the forum here and he will give you good answers and some mild abuse.  :D

You are a brave man to convert Perry French Nappies into Mexicans. There are quite a few differences in the uniforms and you will have to change the musket if you want historical accuracy.

In answer to your question the Boot Hill figures are fine alongside Perrys height wise. They are slightly bulkier but not much. The Empress Figuresvwill be a bit slighter and maybe a fraction smaller but not by much.

Thanks for the heads up Chaps to the Boot Hill Range.

This may well happen if all my fiddling about fails catastrophically!

Thankyou for the advice though, I'm not sure what to do with the French muskets I guess I'll look through some Ospreys and Von Lucky's book! I don't mind if the Boot Hill are abit chunkier also, as in real life people are all different sizes.

Okay, allow me to bring the monkey who likes it amongst the wrenches to the party.  You could follow the eBay advice and then get the Blue Moon figures (through Old Glory) in 18 mm.  It is a very nice range - and you can buy there Alamo set.  If you are a wise chap, you should heed this advice.  But, shhh, don't tell certain people here this - they won't like me redirecting you away from a certain 28 mm range.   lol

The Mexican army used Brown Bess muskets and issued some Baker rifles to Cazadore companies.

The French Charleville musket:

Not the easiest conversion, you could file off the straps around the barrel, but the muzzle area is destinctly different.

To be honest, the difference in the rifle would not bother me.

What would is the fact that the Boot Hill figures are so full of character that I would be gutted that I had used another range of figures that I have had to convert to try and get to the same end result and failed.
Why try fudging it when the best option is already available?

Flog the French Nappies and buy the best 'real' range instead!
