15mm ACW Scatter Terrain
« on: November 28, 2015, 08:43:41 AM »
Hi!

I'm busily working on my ACW stuff and apart from painting also managed to built some small terrain pieces, such as a vegetable garden, a dog house and telegraph poles.

For a detailed description and more images, visit https://wargamingraft.wordpress.com/2015/11/27/acw-terrain-ii-scatter-terrain/

Cheers,
Shandy

Very nice, but that dog house is particularly cute!

The vegetable garden is fantastic. I have been trying to add more elements to my 28mm ACW skirmish games to help increase the feeling that we are fighting over a 'real' battlefield. I try not to get too cheese but houses and barns didn't exist in a vacuum.
I am working on a skirmish at the Corinth Depot and commissioned some buildings for that. I was inspired by Keith Rocco's painting and I am getting some of the elements from his painting such as crates, wagons, standing rail cars and barrels. I have to get some scale track to complete the board.

Thanks again, I'd be interested to see you Corinth Depot buildings, I've also planned to make some railroad stuff for ACW skirmishes.

Also, a pigsty is always worth fightin' for - here's a photo from today's game:

Excellantary, sir, excellantary.  As in excellent elementary items of terrain!   lol

I am traveling a similar road in my thought process.  While a good game is lots of fun, the visual impact of the game is paramount for me.  Sure, you can play a fine game with all red and all blue figures on a plain table with book hills and masking tape roads - but I doubt very much it will live long in many memories.  But even a so-so game on great terrain will be well remembered.  Now all I need is more time to make this happen more often.

The dog house was a cool idea, not one I'd translated to the gaming table so I will be appropriating the idea.

Thanks for the kind words!

I agree, it is getting more and more important to me. Especially for skirmish games, which I mainly play, nice terrain immensely adds to the experience as it not only looks good but also helps to generate stories. And building terrain is fun  :)

Looks great. I also like the dog house  :D

I also play ACW 15mm skirmish games, although I haven't played one for some time :?
It's nice to see.

If you're interested or bored, I have some photos of some of my 15mm games -

There are other photos of my scatter terrain scattered (no pun intended), throughout if you are feeling adventurous in the various albums.

I apologise for the painfulness of Photobucket. I really need to put these in a blog of sorts  ::)

Cheers,

Barry

That's an impressive set up you've got there, Barry, very nice table and figures! What rules do you use?
You really should make a blog - now you'll have at least one reader  ;)

EDIT: And how did you do the corn?

Nice painting and terrain on both of you Shandy and Barry. :-*

And yes, what rules both use?
I´m doing something similar in 20mm. :)

I use Terrible Sharp Sword, the ACW variant of Sharp Practice by TooFatLardies. Great set of rules, we had a first game last weekend and everything worked very well! (A report will come up on the blog on Friday)
There are some very minor tweaks I might want to make, but that's just me, I can't leave anything alone without tinkering  :)

And do we need to have Sharpes practice rules too or the Terrible Sharp Sword is enough?
I´m planing some 30 or 40 figures per side.

Yes, you need to have Sharp Practice. Great rules though, I can highly recommend them. But be aware that the rules try to model battlefield friction, so it tends to get quite chaotic… not the rules you are looking for if you want full control.

EDIT: It works well with 30-40 figures per side, in our last game we had 4 units per side, with each unit having 8 guys, plus some Big Men (officers).

Thanks for the kind words.

The corn was made using branches from an old Christmas tree, trimmed down and then cut to length using a simple jig.

I like the idea of having the troops move through the fields rather than over them and have my field based on  removable square bases. More often than not we will forget to put the removed sections back in the heat of battle which kind of defeats the purpose  ::)

I did buy some of the Busch corn several years ago and it looked really nice. I had planned to replace my existing cornfields with it. However, I eventually sold it as it looked out of character with the rest of the terrain used on my table.

Recently I been thinking of buying a pack or two of the HO JTT corn stalks I've seen on the forum to see how they look n the flesh.

Cheers,

Barry
