Only done a few of the plastics myself at this point but I did notice the tiny, eerie face thing myself.  I wonder how much of the problem is a direct result of the masters being produced via 3D drafting techniques instead of traditional hand sculpting?

I think that's more due to:

1) The sizes of the faces (which are tiny)

2) The fact they are plastic, and this limits how "steep" or angled certain parts can be so that they don't get stuck in the mould.

Add those two up, and that's why it's like painting faces on 15mm models... :P

Cheers guys!
I aim for metal as I think the metal sculpts have way more character. There are a lot of iffy metal sculpts, but most are ace. Ryle was one of those sculpts I hated and the plastic one is spot on.
But I still have my eyes on the McGabe set...it looks very interesting and cool (playwise and modelwise)

Seems like in the long run, you'll be kind of forced into more and more plastics.  No new metals coming out after all, and they're bound to keep coming out with new figs that are too cool to resist.

Jup, but there's always proxies...

For example, I have built Mounted Guardsmen from Confrontation Griffins (Thallion Riders with bodies from Temple of Hod dudes), Griffin Fusiliers as Guild Riflemen, etc.
I'm not a purist...I just want to have cool stuff :)

1) Great paintjobs. love 'em all.

2) Agree on the proxy topic. If a mini looks cool and fit the bill, go for it (not liking the official Metal Gamins I've painted myself a DB mini I liked more. Pretty happy with the result).

3) I also partially lean toward the old metal sculpts. Some were plain ugly, but generally they were more weird and characterful. Rasputina and McMourning for example, are two minis that in metal were wildly better, imho.
