Ravenna- Gaston de Foix Vignette Composition 29.12.15
« on: December 24, 2015, 10:06:17 AM »
I'm aiming to have the Battle of Ravenna done as a demo game, probably not this year but the next. I'moo busy with my Hastings project for Saute at present.

I'm spending a little bit of time every day working on head swaps, conversions and that sort of thing. In order to keep up some kind of momentum I'm posting all the stuff I do get done on my Gewalthaufen Blog. to be honest it's a welcome relief to painting up all those Huscarl, Thegnes, Ceorls and Milites etc.

I've started messing around with what will be Jacob Empsser's Landsknechts including baggage and vignettes (I ordered quite a lot of them when Foundry had their sale!).

Not satisfied with the number of Dopplensoldner that Foundry do, they do two but Marcus was kind enough to send me an unreleased model too, I did a couple of head swaps and a little converting by hacking off a spare's cap and adding a leather helmet/arming cap and sticking the feathered cap slung around his neck.

There are more pics and discussion on my Gewalthaufen Blog here:

Next up is prepping Gaston de Foix, Duke of Nemours Command Group.

Cheers,
Darrell.

Thanks Simon :)

Gaston de Foix, Count of Nemours command base next. Cleaned up that is, not painted! I'm just sort of cleaning up a few and arranging them etc each morning for an hour or so. Keeps me from seeing Huscarls in my sleep!  lol

Still got so much to do for Hastings!

Very nice work so far.  I'm eager to see how this project develops  :)
Now what is this whole life of mortals but a sort of comedy, in which the various actors, disguised by various costumes and masks, walk on and play each one his part, until the manager waves them off the stage?

I've been playing around with the miniatures I'm going to use for Gaston de Foix command bade; trying to come up with a good composition.

To include four French Guards or not? That is the question??

I'll post up some pics of the potential variants of the vignette at some point soon on this thread.

Cheers,
Darrell.

Not sure what happened there....

Above post should read:

I've recently been messing around with the composition for Gason de Foix, Count of Nemours (leader of the French forces during the War of the League of Cambrai) vignette.

If you're interested please pop over to my Gewalthaufen Blog for discussion on the options that I'm as yet undecided upon:

Darrell.

Nice  :D

I like the lance holder chap though perhaps a feathered cloth cap? and the TAG guys look fine, may I also suggest a mounted trumpeter, archer (mounted in his livery) and a herald.

Maybe an arquebusier too as a nod to his death and the dawn of the modern age - arty I know.

Yeah, excellent point about the cloth cap. That would certainly leave him looking more 'French'.

The possibility of including Mounted Herald and Trumpeter had dawned on me Stuart but as Gaston is on foot I might perhaps convert one of the Warlord/Pro Gloria herald models bu means of a swift head change and then set to work on a Perry Trumpeter of come sort. This of course will mean heavy conversion work [shudders!] :)

Adding the extra miniatures might also lend itself to me losing the guards. They can take their place in with the Picards and Gascons at some point.

Also, Here's Louis de la Tremoille depicted in tapestry (Siege of Dijon, 1513) Note his bodyguard in livery.

Thanks Stuart- weird that they are very similar miniatures to what I was envisaging.... going to have to think again now!

 ;) :)

On the other hand, these two pics although English Bill, must have been similar to Gasonts Guards as he certainly wouldn't have had the King's bodyguard with him.

Looks as though the TAG Imperial Guard mini's will stay as Gason's Bodyguard. Possibly with a head swap or two. It would be nice to leave one or two in their caps.

Good luck with this project. I look forward to more posts.

I'm always thinking about doing Ravenna as a demo game but I always come up a bit short on the heavy cavalry. I've got 128, if I include 24 Archer figures, but I think I'd need at least another 50 to have a good figure to man ratio.
