make some baskets for dirt-cheap
« on: January 07, 2016, 12:19:58 PM »
For the purpose of my Rome Project (right here), i have to get a great amount of basket for a market place scenario.
I choose to realize them by myself , saving my money for buying figurines instead (Don't tell it to my wife  ;) ).
So , there is the tutorial for making your own baskets.

1) Buy a placemat (Action store: € 0.86)

2) Buy a small diameter wooden stick (DIY store, less than one euro per meter).
Don't use balsa stick because it's too fragile and can be broken for the wrapping step.

3) Cut strips in the table set height.

4) Cut a strip with dimensions allowing them to be wrapped around the wooden stick.

5) Paste a strip on the wooden strick by pressing with a mini clip. Let dry.
For reasons of handling during the work, it is highly recommend to do it on the wooden stick and cut the done basket after the tape is dried.
This operation is quite long but really convenient. Otherwise, you can use several shorter sticks.

6) Cut just the stick to the base of the basket.

7) Fill the basket with items representing food, materials. I use quite grainy decorative sand or alike material.

8) Paint all according to your needs.

9) Staging now, your baskets on the market or in the streets of Rome, or anywhere else.

Hope that could be useful.

Excellent idea. I've got some of these mats in white. I picked them up for window shuttering for my Jihadistan project. Good to find another use for them.  8)

i forget to say that i use the two ends of the stick, at the stage 5 of the tutorial  o_o

so, i double my production line. 8)

And to speed the production, i cut it with a miter saw.

i know it's not a modelling tool but that's work !

Cheers

Easier and cheaper option may be to use hessian fabric.
