Wow! Great news. Looking forward to that. Let's hope they keep up the high standard they set with season 3, which I actually thought was better under Amazon's stewardship, than the original two seasons when it was owned by the BBC.

Season 3 just showed up on Netflix and I'm about halfway through. Glad there will be more!

Ditto. I was a bit worried they'd go downhill, but apart from culling a couple of good peripheral characters, which upset me a tad (perhaps it was out of their hands and a result of the actors' ambitions elsewhere) I really enjoyed it.

Well I've been watching the first episode of season 4 for the last 55 minutes, and wondering why it does not seem to be moving rapidly to a conclusion... It turns out episode 1 of season 4 is 2 hours and 10 minutes long...
All a bit odd. Along with fact that it's been slid out into the water with none of the usual fanfare on Amazon.
Not sure what it portends. Perhaps nothing. Strange though.
The production standards seem as high as ever. Most of the familiar characters appear to be present and correct. The story is a bit slow so far... Think I might come back to it tomorrow.

Blimey! I had no idea there was a 4th season!
Time to sign back up to Amazon Prime methinks.

Think I might come back to it tomorrow.

Did you manage to get back to it Richard?
Don't!

Not yet. Tonight Neil!  :)

Edit: just finished it. Apparently this episode (1 of 8 )is an Amazon exclusive edit, maybe accounting for its exceptional length. Presumably when it eventually makes it onto the BBC is will be a much shorter edit.

Great CGi of London docklands, some great characterisation and pithy, snappy dialogue, especially the sharp exchanges between the three main protagonists, as well written as ever. Plus a bravura performance from David Threlfall as a new character - a kind of Fagin-like docks Godfather. Really a wonderful perfromance.

On the minus side, the episode dragged a bit, the story was all a bit meh, there were some shonky looking Bengal lancers, in uniforms that looked like the Dagenham Girl Pipers, and one or two of the new police characters were a bit lightweight and not very interesting.

But overall - it's still got it  8)

A splendid review Richard! Thanks very much.  :)

I'll blow the dust off the Amazon Prime account and have a watch at the weekend.

Episode 2. Absolutely superb. Wonderful wonderful acting, dialogue, production design, story. So much deeper, better and more in every way than it was when the Beeb was running it.
Which is sad really.
But there you go.
Cannot recommend it highly enough.

All set to watch it tonight. Popcorn cooling nicely in the fridge and beer in the popcorn maker.

Something like that anyway...

Just watched "Ripper Street" series 4 episodes 1 and 2. Brilliant! The dialogue is superb and the relationships between the various characters is excellent.

Can't wait for episode 3.
