Great British Martian fleet WIP Uodated PIC HEAVY
« on: December 08, 2008, 02:18:23 PM »
Hi all

I've been a bit quiet lately having been stuck in to work but needless to say I have been quietly tinkering away in the early hours. My new project is to build up my British aeronef fleet to combat Rabbitz Prussian arms race following his last annihilation at the hands of the space squid  ;)

Now, I'm quite a fan of the brigade aeronef models on the whole. Really like their Russian and German fleets and their Japanese stuff is nice and stylish. But the British fleet always left me feeling a little flat. So I thought to myself...the British were always overstretched in keeping together their empire and quite good at finding solutions on the cheap. What if they re-used their old ironclads? I found an image somewhere of something similar where the floatation was by huge balloons filled with hot air from the roaring furnaces.

Anyway, I found some of the skytrex ironclads on fleabay and picked up a few for a couple quid each. Nice models and they came with lots of good detail and extras like lifeboats etc which have filled my 'bits' box. I've added large rams and tailfins using plasticard and the balloons are either brigade or cheap jewellery bits.

Hope to show you these painted soon in our next battle report as they wup some Prussian behind.
Think I'll go black hull with teak decks but wasn't sure about the balloons. Suggestions gentlemen?

These look fantastic.  Can't wait to see them painted.  I beg that you take some "table-top" views rather than overhead views.  In fact, they'd look even more impressive as if seen from troops on the ground.

But what colour is the sky on Mars?

Usually Mars is refrred as "the red planet".
the soil is like terracotta colour but the sky is more transparent, but due to lack of earth type atmosphere the sky has different colours, depending on the time of the day and possibly of the season, the martian sky looks more reddish!
So, what. Sky blue could be fine, red/terracotta also fine.

In VSF anything could go!

Darn unsporting, I say! Leave it to the dastardly Germans to denigrate themselves like that! The only viable option should be a good darkish blue with a 200ft Union Jack!  :-[ ;) lol

Nice idea, and suitably crazy to pull it off.

Great style in your scratchbuild.

It's certainly a very romantic take on aeronefs.

Very cool looking! I have been looking for aeronef conversion ideas for some old Naopleonic ships I have sitting around and this may have a few snag-able ideas.
