Interesting US vehicle photo

I scanned this image showing the US Army 7th Armored Cavalry Brigade taken in 1938.  Interesting pre-WW2 vehicles:

interesting photo. My great-uncle was in the cavalry at about that time, but he was still on a horse! I have a great picture of him with his mount somewhere.

The small tanks are M1A1's HMG armed stewarts/Honeys

The M1 and M2 were not called "Stuart" or "Honey", but "Combat Car". Stuart/Honey was the name given to the M3/M5 series by the British, who received large numbers of it under the lend and lease treaty. Interestingly enough, until the advent of the M-26 Pershing and Patton tanks, the US military did not officially name their vehicles, so the names associated with the various earlier types are a British creation.

White scout cars - yes, but also halftracks and command cars.  Click on the image for enlargement.

Awesome pics!  Thanks for posting.  Very cool to see since I recently read about the trials and tribulations of the mechanized officers in the US Army trying to bring about armored cavalry in a culture that was still horse-centric.

Note the half-tracks are very open-topped - even more vulnerable than the M2s and M3s we used in WW2.

A bit of trivia on the "Combat Car."  It was called a Combat Car because there was a Federal law prohibiting any part of the US Army except for the Infantry from having tanks!  A rose by any other name ...
