Jennifer's Frostgrave Stuff -- Sculpting a Roper
« on: February 06, 2016, 05:19:04 AM »
Hello I am brand new here.  My name is Jennifer.  This looks like an absolutely delightful forum!

I've been working on some Frostgrave stuff -- exclusively as of late.  I am totally new to crafting, wargaming & painting miniatures (as of the past year).

Well I'll start replying to this thread with terrain & miniature pieces now. :)

Mausoleum

Mausoleum

Entirely of cardboard, chipboard, sand, white glue, hot glue & bbq skewers.

I need to give someone credit now. I copied much of the following gentleman's design:
http://thelostandtheverydamned.blogspot.com/2015/12/frostgrave-dungeon-tiles-mausoleum.html

However, the pillars were my own creation from a technique I developed (not saying it hasn't been done before but I personally haven't seen it), made from partially separated corrugated cardboard, with each corrugation rail filled with bbq skewers (adhered with white/pva glue).

Here it is:

The crafting of this starts here in my dmscraft crafting thread:
http://dmscraft.proboards.com/post/48639/thread

I still need to cap it with a dome or the like.

Stone Hut Ruins
« Reply #2 on: February 06, 2016, 05:35:34 AM »
The Haunted Houses scenario calls for roofless stone huts, so my personal interpretation of this means "Stone Hut Ruins".

I will be making a total of six stone hut ruins in various states of ruin -- some mostly or fully intact (without roofs still).

The bricks were hand shaped using both sets of thumbs and index fingers, made of toilet paper mache.  See my crafting thread for details on the recipe and how I did this (it's my own personal technique I developed -- not saying others haven't done it before though):  http://dmscraft.proboards.com/post/49009/thread

Ledge Ruins w/ Two Staircases

Ledge Ruins w Two Staircases

I need some ruins, so this is a start.  I copied it from Meph on dmscraft.proboards.com -- thank you Meph!  Also copied it from http://xinslair.blogspot.com/2015/11/frostgrave-8-player-battle-report_12.html

But I used 1/2 inch rigid foam insulation instead of 1 inch (except for the stairs).

Note: miniatures aren't too scale, these are pretty big at around 32mm instead of 25-28mm.

By the way the gaming mat in the previous post is made of heavy canvas ($11.99 a yard but $6 a yard with daily coupon from Hanncock's Fabric)--each yard is 60 inches wide btw.

I painted it first with a Heavy coat of espresso (almost black) brown, to seal all the threads together.  Unfolds very nicely & flat and looks a tad three dimensional due to hand stippling of medium gray then white acrylic paint over the dark paint.

EDIT: If you decide to make one of these make sure to leave at least a couple extra inches along all the borders because when the first/base coat of acrylic paint dries it wrinkles up the edges -- which you can then cut off clean after drying and have a nice flat border.   If for some reason after that a corner is lifting a little as it continues to dry even more, weigh it down with a book or something so it dries flat.  For the stippling of the white snow, I used a wall trim paint brush -- about a 1 inch wide brush by 3/4 inch.

Details in my dmscraft crafting thread:  http://dmscraft.proboards.com/post/48598/thread and here http://dmscraft.proboards.com/post/47656/thread

My game mat is about 33 inches by 38 inches, to accommodate my kitchen table; my table not wide enough for 36" so made the other dimension 2 inches longer -- I hope this is okay? (I have yet to play Frostgrave).

Giant Frost Worm

Giant Frost Worm

Going to make four of these.  They were made with foil framework, Mc'Donald's napkins & white glue paper mache, toilet paper mache, Liquitex Modeling Paste for the rings, toothpicks for the teeth (thanks DMScotty).  Index card stock, avery permanent glue stick, circle punch/die, construction sand & acrylic paint for base.

Reaper paints for the blue:  MSP HD Tropical Blue.  Cheap craft paints for the white dry brushing and mouth.

The saliva/drool was my own creation by experimenting with hot glue running off edge of paper.  I then clip off a nice looking one and hot glue to a dot of hot glue on the mouth.

I varnished the teeth with glossy wood varnish.  Painted teeth with reaper "Dirty Bone" paint.

Crafting details start here:  http://dmscraft.proboards.com/post/48698/thread

Three more patiently waiting to be finished and get into the ground (these three are about 90% toilet paper mache, except for the initial paper layer).  Did these in three layers and let dry a few days before each layer.

Well of Dreams & Sorrows -- Modular Well
« Reply #6 on: February 06, 2016, 06:02:25 AM »
Well of Dreams & Sorrows

I copied a lot of the design of this from:  http://oi66.tinypic.com/2se1u.jpg

I made it modular though with laminated color laser prints. The well donut comes out and the paper sits underneath it.

Here is the Well of Dreams and Sorrows:

An example of it's modularity:  Well of Blood & Tears

or how about a laminated color laser printout of a portal you get to jump into! :)

or recently as a town statue stand (got the ceramic statue from flea market for $1 and painted):

Still need to make short pillar plinths for the smaller constructs in the photo above.  I think I'll create a Frostgrave scenario where that statue comes to life along with it's smaller construct minions around it.. so you have to battle both the large statue and each of the minions she randomly activates in turn -- both parties have to team up to survive this else they both die -- after they kill her then can resume to collect treasure chests and kill each other lol.. just an idea.

Looks like a great start.  You are clearly very creative.  I like the worm but especially like the gaming mat - simple but very effective.

Welcome to the forum. It all looks great. Thanks for sharing. I particularly like the added detail of the saliva on the worm

Welcome to the LAF! Looking at the terrain you've made I wouldn't guess that you're a newcomer to the hobby. It looks very good!

Holly cow! Now that's an entrance.  Love the scenery.  I'm going to copy some of those ideas.
