Need help creating German title.
« on: February 14, 2016, 12:58:13 AM »
Hello

As I plan out my ww2 alternate history project I have hit a snag in the name of a fictitious German unit.  I know a little German, enough to say Hello and goodbye and probably get my face slapped, but need help with this name:

'Special Marine Commando Force'

It is a branch of the German Navy.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   :)

Pete

Can't help with the name, but I am intrigued with the concept, German marine commands, sounds interesting, will you be using Kriegsmarine figures?

Historically, there was (and is) the Seebataillon, which was originally formed in 1852 and, through various incarnation, fulfilled Naval Infantry tasks throughout the Royal Prussian, Imperial German, and the Third Reich (following a hiatus in the Weimar Republic and various changes after 1935, if I am not mistaken).

Generally, one would use a combination of terms that designates the unit's scope and purpose. Often, this would include a unit number.

A possible one would be:

Marinebataillon Abteilung 123 z.b.V. (z.b.V. abbrev. "zur besonderen Verwendung") which could be translated as "Naval Batallion, Detachment 123 (Special Operations)".

If you could provide some ideas as to size/organisational unit, place of station etc., we could work out something more specific for your purpose.

The current Bundesmarine equivalent is the Kommando Marine Spezialkräfte - roughly, "Special Forces Command (Naval)".

There were German marine commandos in WW2, the Küstenjäger, so there's no need to invent anything. They were part of the Brandenburg division and saw quite a bit of action in the Aegean during the Dodecanese campaign in 1943.

Try "Panzerblitzwasser Kommando-Bataillon"  Probable English Translation is "Rapid Entry Armoured Amphibious Commando Battalion."

I should have done some more research before posting.  I thought the Brandenberg Regiment was infantry/infiltrators only but have since found they also had a paratroop and coastal raider group (the ones Carlos mentioned).  So, no need to re-invent the wheel.

Paddy649 -- That's a mouthful!  But...it sounds great!  I'll have to fit that title into the project somewhere.   :D

Thanks for the replies, gents.  I knew you could help.

I hope it's going to be painted onto armbands (in gothic script white on black) onto all your figures :~}

I remember we had couple of aristocratic German undergraduates once (twins) with names like Julian Heinrich von und zu Wolfensteinberghausen-unter-dem-Tisch - details are not accurate, length is.
