Has anyone tried these free rules?
« on: December 18, 2008, 01:35:47 AM »
I was looking through the Ramshackle Games website, and I was wondering if anyone has ever played their free Nuclear Renaissance Rules?  They look sort of neat, but before I bother printing and reading, thought I would check for summaries and criticisms of those who have tried it.  I would love to find a reason to use my collection of 40k models (as I don't really like 40k anymore)

The rules are here in pdf: http://www.ramshacklegames.co.uk/nuclear/downloads.html

Thanks,
JET

I have downloaded those rules. They look pretty chunky, but have not played them. I think the skills and abilities section is nice and expansive, even humorous at times. I do wish they had included a list of mutations and such, though I guess you can fudge a lot of those with the other abilities.

Interesting Rules, didn't notice them on the Ramshackle Games website before.
Far less active than I used to...

Well, obviously I have played them, being I co wrote them!

NucRen is a very detailed game, theres loads of freedom. Vehciles are very musch a big part of the game, and controlling them is really very intergrated. The other guy who wrote the rules is a very amazing sword fighter in real life, so the rules really try to reflect a more realistic take on combat. However, because of this the version on the site is very maths heavy, which is its weakness.

Im actually working on a new set of rules. They are less maths based, so speed up the game. Im even at the stage now where we need to get some playtesting done. This second version is much better than the one on the site, so if you are interested I can send you the new one. SOme critisim would be very uesfull.

Basically, the new rules improve the flow of the game, but dont lose any of the detail. The game blances issues with vehicles too. The main good thing about NucRen is that it works really well multi player. We had a four player game with Debakuk from this forum the other day. It was his first game and he picked up the rules in a couple of turns.

PM me if you want the new version. Its still work in progress at the mo, but in a good way! We have all the rule shammered down and now its just about tweaking the balance a bit.

Oh, sorry for the long meandering post, but this is very exciting for me!

PM sent, I looked over the rules in the past but since the PDFs didn't work at home (old version of Acrobat and no internet ;)) I never had a good look on them. I liked the detail (assless chaps, hehehehe), but I wasn't too fond of the victorian style of the models.

The new version of the rules sounds good so I would like to try it :)

You think its too VSF? Hmm. Well, dunno. I try to keep the Victorians as just one faction, maybe I need to tone it down a bit, and up the post apoc...

I'd say you should do as you please and not as I say, I didn't even know they were a faction of their own and your vehicles (esp. that spider tank) are very popular with VSF gamers too, so there's no harm in that I'd think. 8)
