28mm Metal Dark ages.
« on: March 24, 2016, 02:39:33 PM »
I'm looking into getting back into some 28mm Saga. I've got a band of Scots (Gripping Beast) and a band of Vikings (Wargames Factory~Barf~). What I want to do next is build a force of Vikings or Anglo-Saxons in metal. This is where I need your help. None of the stores in my area carry any metal dark age figures in 28mm, therefore I can't get my hands on any to judge the sculpts. I've done a few forum searches but the mini manufacturing market is fairly volatile and companies producing just a few years ago are sometimes closed. I would like to gather opinions (and links!) on what companies I should check out. Who makes nice sculpts, what ranges scale nicely with one another, etc.  So far I'm really liking the Wargames Foundry stuff ( http://www.wargamesfoundry.com/dark-age ). I'm also curious about Old Glory but their pictures are less than awesome. Thanks for the help!

For Vikings you should take a look here: http://stronghold-terrain.de/index.php/dark-age/saga-collectibles-miniatures.html

They are great.

I am a fan of Crusader Miniatures. I do not like Old Glory's dark age figures though.

Saxon Miniatures does look very nice. I'm not sure about that shipping cost to the US though. 25% of the total order? Yikes!

There are plenty of figures to choose from, and most are compatible.
I use Black Tree Design (I have never had problems ordering from them), Artizan, Crusader, plastic GB, Eureka, Footsore.  I like the look of Saxon Miniatures and Drabant.

A mixture of Artizan, Crusader, Eureka and plastic GB.

Black Tree and Footsore against Artizan, Crusader and GB Vikings.

This photo was taken for an abandoned thread about my foray into fantasy.  Taken in poor light, but you get teh idea.
Crusader, Black Tree, Eureka, Thunderbolt Mountain orc, Frostgrave (Mantic) skellie, two elves from Thunderbolt Mt, Footsore, plastic GB, Artizan.

I'm liking the Black Tree shipping prices! The Footsore minis are great though. I always forget about those guys.

A third vote for these guys.

And the Gripping Beast plastic Saxon Thegns brush up very nicely.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.

The GB plastic thegns are better than both the Vikings and the dark age warriors (generic unarmoured types).  But, I wouldre commend getting all 3 as the heads are interchangeable and you get a lot of variety.
