Vertical Castle Scenery
« on: April 17, 2016, 05:30:14 PM »
Greetings!

Aeons ago I've built a BIG scenery like this one (featured in an old WD issue) for Necromunda that was a big hit with my gaming group...

... and I'm insanely considering building a similar castle-like structure for Gothic Horror skirmishes and vampire-hunting RPG adventures...

I would appreciate very much your thoughts on the subject, THANK YOU!  ;)

Yep, a very good idea. Plenty of scope for the various levels and rooms above and below ground in the Vampires lair.

Thanks, Malamute!

I'm planning a structure with lots of underground crypts, secret passages and high towers...

I just must not forget to do the whole thing modular for transport!  :)

Saw something similar for Starship Trooper a few years ago.
Looked like an ant farm, which is appropriate.

You need the ground floor dining hall with the long table and lots of candles and cobwebs and large fireplace .Bedrooms upstairs for unfortunate guest to spend their final hours and a library.

Nice touches, Malamute, thank you very much!

I am looking for inspiration in the classical 1950s-1970s Hammer films; also in the site TV TROPES there is a great insight on the genre as well: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/HammerHorror

The big library will be the place suitable for a scene reminescent of the Tanz der Vampire musical -under the same light, there will be a ballroom somewhere as well...  ;)

As you've said, lots of candles, but I will extend the table to accommodate 12 guests!  ;)

Hammer Films is a great idea for inspiration, they're sets and costumes were always excellent. I'll be following your thread and looking forward to your progress.

Rather than making it vertical, why not consider doing different "floors" of a castle that can be laid out over a table? (sub-basement with underground river and boat through to mad scientist lair) It may lose a bit of the impact, but it will be really playable and then you can modify the "castle" for different games.

Hat Guy, we already have a BIG and "conventional" modular castle, that uses A LOT of table space once the different floors are laid down! The idea of a "vertical" one is to recycle the idea of a proven scenery for multiplayer games that we already done for Necromunda aeons ago!  ;)

But thanks a lot for the underground river idea, what about this boatman? (from Fenryll)

I actually remember that photograph from White Dwarf.  I think that making a gothic horror castle would be an excellent idea, and I would love to see it.  I'm currently playing Frostgrave, but want to give my miniatures and terrain a gothic vibe.

Given the open, vertical design, I think that it would be very worthwhile to look at level maps for the older, platform-style Castlevania games.  The level designs are pretty congruent with your current, Necromunda terrain.  It would also be cool to have a subterranean, crypt, or watery area at the very bottom levels.
