Starting out in Dinoproof...Battle Report and game play
« on: May 15, 2016, 04:07:44 PM »
So to kick off our new Dinoproof campaign, we have to create our Slayers

This here's Chance Rockwell...Dino Hunter!

He's pretty good in close combat and not too stupid and can handle a firearm, but he isn't the bravest. He rolls a high 7 on his Nerdatone score. Plus his 1 for Int, it means dinos can sense him from 8 inches away. This isn't such a bad thing as he'll want to get into close combat as soon as he can. He'll just have to watch out for being ganged up on as he isn't the bravest Slayer in town.

Now he gets to pick a skill. Organised Packer means he can swap out weapons without taking an action. He picks a good strong double handed weapon, a trusty Fire Axe, then a pistol and knife as back up, and finally a bandage just in case. He grabs himself a Stab Vest, bringing his toughness up to 9...As this is his first time in the Dino Zone, he doesn't have any events to manage, so he's good to go.

He's going to be in the Dino Zone with another newbie Slayer, Roscoe McQueen.

They roll to see which scenario they'll be taking part in. Rolling a 1, this is a simple, kill the most dinos to win, scenario.

Each Slayer then gets to spend their population points, these are spent on everything that will inhabit the Dino Zone. Chance goes for a Pachycephalosaurus, Gorgosaurus,Velociraptor, Dilophosaurus and 2 Compsognathus swarms. Roscoe goes for 2 Parasaurolophus , 2 Compsognathus swarms, a Pachycephalosaurus, a Velociraptor and a Nail Bomb trap. The dinosaurs will form the Dinosaur Pool, and the trap will be placed by Roscoe before the game. Traps are hidden in crates until a Slayer opens it.

The Slayers are heading into the desert. The board is set. Each player places a food/water supply token and a supply crate for every modifier they have in Int. Roscoe gets to place an extra crate with a trap hidden in. Then the players roll to see who is Player 1, it's Roscoe, then they get to take turns place half of the dinosaur pool on the board. The players need to decide which side is North. It will be the with the larger of the two hills on.

Roscoe has scouted a crate that he wants in the South, so he's going to try and land on it.

Unfortunately the wind has blown him slightly off course.

Chance wants to land next to this loan Compy swarm.

But the wind changed direction and blows him off course too. Slayers can bring in there landing 1 inch for every Int modifier they have. If either Slayers were smarter, they could have reduced the distance they were blown away by.

Roscoe scrambles up the hill and opens the crate.

Finding himself some Ammo. Being a gun man, Roscoe his happy about it. That's his actions used up, so now he gets to control the dinos that can sense Chance.

The raptor is just out of Chance's nerdatone range, but the compys are in, so they'll come over to attack.

They gnaw at his boots, but are unable to bite through his armour and beat his toughness score. Chance takes no damage from the attack.

Roscoe now sees how many dinos he can bring in from thee wandering dino pool. he rolls a 3 so gets to pick 3 dinos. He'll need to roll to see which side of the board they'll appear on.

Some compys and a parasaurolophus appear on the west side, while a dilophosaurus wanders on from the south. Now Roscoe controls the dinos in their Animal Instinct phase.

He gets 3 to move

The two parasaurolophus' move toward the water for a drink, while the compys chase after one they entered with. (they must have been chasing it before they turned up in the dino zone)

Now it's Chances turn.

He manages to squish the compys (first blood to Chance)

And uses his second action to join the chase.

Now controlling the wandering dinos (there wre no dinos sensing Roscoe), he brings on the big nasty Gorgosaurus. And bad luck for Roscoe, it comes in just behind him.

In his animal instinct phase, Chance moves the Gorgosaurus closer to the nearest herbivore...Which happens to move him closer to Roscoe! Lastly he sends the Pachycephalosaurus off to munch on some leaves. Taking it out of the game for a turn.

Sensing the danger, Roscoe turns around to fire at the Gorgosaurus. He's only able to hit with one shot, meaning the creature is still standing. Now that Roscoe has fired his rifle, his nerdatone range jumps up to 10", meaning he'll be attracting the attention of everything nearby.

Meanwhile Chance is now being attacked. The compys take a bite out of his leg.

While the Parasaurolophus swings and misses.

Chance is down by 1 health level. Still plenty to go before he needs to worry.

As more dinos file in on the south side.

With two solid hits of his fire axe, Chance takes down both dinos! "IN YOUR FACE MOTHER NATURE!"

Not best pleased about being shot at, the Gorgosaurus charges at Roscoe. He lets out a bellowing roar as he charges. This is a special ability. Roscoe has to make a Chutzpah check. Luckily he rolls well and is fine. If he failed, he'd have lost an action in his next turn.

Not worried by his bark or bite, Roscoe is able to block the attack. Which is lucky as they do a lot of damage!

The bad news for Roscoe is that he can't use his rifle in close combat. He could punch it, but he isn't much of a fighter, and his fists do little damage. So he uses an action to grab his machete, and he swings for the beast. He catches it..Just, but manages to take it down. If he had had to Organised Packer skill that Chance has, he could have changed weapons over without it costing him an action.

With no more dinos sensing Chance and no more left in the wandering pool. It's the animal instinct phase, and uses this time to better position the dinos for himself as he send the compys towards the  Parasaurolophus.

Meanwhile, Chance heads north for some fresh kills and to see what's in the crate.

Chance uses his animal instinct phase to have the raptor attack the Pachycephalosaurus. This will tie those two up in combat, allowing him to open the crate uninterrupted, and maybe even pick off some wounded dinos...A kills a kill!

Roscoe re-equips his rifles, but fails to hit. He didn't run out of ammo at least, but his nerdatone range has gone back up to 10" because of the loud weapon.

Although Chances' nerdatone range could be sensed, the two dinos who could are currently at each others throats.

Roscoe uses his animal instinct phase to have the raptor kill the Parasaurolophus. No one will get money or xp for the kill, but it's one less creature that can gang up on him later.

Chance runs up to the crate and opens it to see what's inside.

Only to take a Nail Bomb to the face for a whopping 3 points of damage!

Down in the south, Roscoe continues not to hit anything with his rifle, as the dinos get ever closer.

Shaken and wounded by the trap, Chance draws his pistol, taking out the wounded raptor, but failing to hit the Pachycephalosaurus.

The dinos close in on Roscoe. Dilophosaurus' have a nasty venom attack that can be made from a distance. As the venom burns through his biker leathers, Roscoe takes a point of damage.

Things go from bad to worse for Chance as the Pachycephalosaurus connect with a thunderous charge attack. This special ability allows them to course more damage if they attack on the charge. This headbutt knocks Chance down to only 2 health levels remaining. Now wounded, Chance will have to make a Chutzpah check at the start of each turn, or have all rolls reduced by -1.

Able to over come his injuries, Chance swing his fire axe as hard as he can, and cleaves the Pachycephalosaurus in two.

Roscoe starts to take a beating from all sides.

Chance considers going for the remaining crate, but, although he's in the lead for dino kills, he realises that if Roscoe can clear out the remaining dinos, he can just clench the lead. So, sucking it up, Chance charges across the desert to join in the action.

Roscoe takes out the compys but that doesn't stop the raptor taking a chunk out his back.

As he drops down to his last health level...He probably wish that crate had a medical supply in right now.

With the raptor now out of the fight, Roscoe tried to machete the Pachycephalosaurus in the face. He rolls a one. The machete bounces off its domed bone head and becomes rickety. If he rolls a 1 again, it's broken and cannot be used.

The appearance of Chance (and his higher nerdatone value) has caught the attention of the Dilophosaurus.

Having killed the Pachycephalosaurus, and Chances' inability to hit the Dilophosaurus, this ties the game.

As Chance fires, seemingly blindly, Roscoe takes this chance to charge the Dilophosaurus and go for the kill, but sadly comes up short.

Continuing to fire wildly at the dinosaurs general direction, Chance finally hits, and just in time too, to kill the Dilophosaurus  and win the game!

The Slayers are battered and bruised, but they survived (just about).

The Slayers get to count up their kills. Chance having an impressive haul.

Chance gains all the money and XP from his kills (plus bonus XP and money for taking part which hasn't been noted yet). He then gets 1 Star Factor for surviving the game and a bonus point for winning...He's on his way to becoming super Slayer!

My 10-yera-old son is a dino fanatic and has been collecting and painting dinosaur miniatures since he was 6.  We are both really excited for this game and I just bought a copy.  It looks really easy to play and should be a lot of fun. Thanks for theguide to basic play.

I looking through the pics and I'm just imagining this guy going around and just kicking everything. "All your problems can just be solved by a kick. This little dino bugging you? *PUNT*. How about those Velociraptor then? *BOOT*. Ahhh, that T-Rex is getting in your face? *Whoosh* Aaaaaaaahhhh!!!!."
Looking for a set of rules that adaptable for different genres.

I think that's exactly what was being shouted. As well as plenty of "In the face!!!" :D
