A lovely game to play in. Great scenario and figures, although on reflection it doesn’t look much like the saltmarshes and flat levels of Dr Syn country...  lol

And my dice rolling was predictably terrible, meaning my dragoons got nowhere near achieving anything they were supposed to, and Captain Softlove was speedily despatched by the smugglers, his putative superiority with the rapier counting for zilch when I persisted in rolling 2s on a D12, while the enemy (RMZ!) merrily rolled 8s, 9s and 10s on D10s with monotonous regularity  ::)

The melee rules in this set need some moderation methinks, otherwise it’s just a random dash to suicide. You may as well just flip a coin. Apart from that - great fun, thanks Nick  :)

Great game to play and a very interesting scenario, if only I knew what was in the box.

Yep he’s relocated to Dorset.  ;) :)

Regards the melee rules. There are traits we can give the characters, Swordsman, skilled etc, that might balance it better. Will look into those.

I think you should invest in some dice for better rolling. ;) lol

I think you guys were playing a stripped down version of the rules without bells and whistles. IIRC they use a modified version of the original FfoL:H&M rules.

Aha! You mean they were playing the rules wrong? That doesn't surprise me ;)

My ace, rapier-armed swordsman and officer goes up again a rustic klutz with cudgel. He should beat him easily of course - or there should at least be a reasonable probability of beating him. I get a +1 advantage to my die roll for using a better weapon. That's it. He rolls a 10, I roll a 2 - game over.
Using the differential between two high value (D10/D12) rolls for melee, with so few modifiers for 'quality' or ability, and with so much scope for wildly divergent results makes the outcome simply too dependent on the dice.
What were we doing wrong?
(Apart from rolling terrible dice in my case :D)
