The Three Musketeers and the sequel with Olly Reed and Micheal York  :)

I also like the third film from the same team, based on "Twenty Years After" (though actually made 15 years after the first two).
Back from the dead, almost.

Personally I think it failed in several ways, which is a shame because there are some good bits in it but not enough for me to want to watch it again  :(

You should try

The Deluge
Its historical epic but have some flouncy material like this

And is available with english subtitles. Very good movie.

There and also
With Fire and Sword (a prequel, worse movie but more flouncy material there that is available in english)

Third part of the trilogy called Colonel Wolodyjowski is great material too and is on YT with english subtitles

They have very distinct Polish commonwealth flavor and most of the story is happening on today Ukraine

I was kidding  ;)

None of the actual Treasure Island movies really grab me - no, not even the Robert Newton version.
I have high hopes they will one day take Black Sails all the way through to Treasure Island...

I actually really like the Charlton Heston version. It has a great cast and music by The Chieftains.

The Musketeer (2001) - Tim Roth was a fantastic villain.

Black Robe (1991)

The Three Musketeers (1993) - Tim Curry was an excellent Cardinal Richelieu and Rebecca De Mornay  was great eye candy.

The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

Flesh+Blood (1985) - first film I saw landskechts in, otherwise a bad movie.

Rob Roy (1995) - Tim Roth once again makes a great villain

The Mission (1986) - Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons, what is more to say.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)

The Black Adder II (1986)

So the general consensus on Black Sails seems to be positive around here, is that right?  I have a friend who dismissed it when I asked him about it, but I don't always trust his taste/opinion on TV and movies to align with my own...

The very short film, "Duel at Blood Creek" on Vimeo, posted here back in 2012:

And, by the way, I'm a fan of "Black Sails." Just this morning was having a discussion with my housemate about how some crusty old wargamers will complain about anything, including rectangular Saxon shields in "The Last Kingdom." So what? There are so many fantastic TV series that have come out in the last few years that we seem to be living in a golden age of TV. "Black Sails" is visually spectacular, mixes historical and fictional elements in a timeline scramble, and is far more gritty and sexy and well paced than most older Hollywood productions. Great entertainment, and visually inspiring for miniatures.

I think so, it depends on what you want. The violence is brutal and usually over quickly. There is pelnty of intrigue and double crossing. The backstories are excellent and well thought out and I think it gives a pretty good impression of what a life of piracy might have been like. And it has Captain Flint and Long John Silver. Nuff said lol

Thanks! I think my friend was moaning about not enough fight scenes and too much character intrigue for him, but like I said, tastes do not necessarily coincide.  ;)

Alatriste

Love the books!

the First and last scenes of the movie are awesome and most of the Swordplay is great but the movie just doesn't work as a movie. That said anyone who likes the period should take a look.

Lately I've been very much into Jack of All Trades. Yes, it's silly and often juvenile, but those are a nice change from the grimness of say Black Sails.

It's a Bruce Campbell swashbuckling thing they only produced one season (22 episodes) of, and features devious (but stupid) Frenchmen, British and American spies and a wonderful fictitious island named Pulau-Pulau. For a taste of the series' tone:
