I Fought, We Won: The Glorantha Project Thread

Hi gang! After being inspired by these:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=69449.0

I have finally decided to get my own Gloranthan project up and running, and I was hoping to recruit some other folks on the forum to contribute their own work, both as a way to spread the love and to inspire our own work. I've spoken to a couple fellows who have their own ideas, and I hope to see them add their work here. Anyone else who is interested, please feel free to add! I'd love to  see what vision people have, and I'd like to introduce others to this excellent world.

My own project is an Orlanthi Warband, lead by a Storm Lord, fighting a guerilla war against the Lunar Empire in the mountains of Sartar. A mixture of minis I've been collecting for years for just such a project, using Frostgrave, 7th Voyage, or whatever strikes my fancy! Pics to follow as soon as the band is assembled, hopefully tonight.

Again, please feel free to contribute! Pictures, art, ideas, corrections... whatever! Glorantha was the first fantasy setting I really fell in love with, and I hope others feel the same way.

I shall visit with pics, soon.  After an eleven year break, I am back at the Gloranthan brush.

I finished these late yesterday, my first new Gloranthan toys since 2005 or thereabouts.  The models are from Rapier.

The plan is to build a chaos force around these and use them to eat mate Ian's Praxians using the fantasy rules I am developing from my To the Strongest!" ancients rules.  More toys later this week...

Not at all; the Lunar army is a progressive, equal opportunities institution.  :-)

Very nice! I assembled my Orlanthi force, then noticed I had several chainmail bits on various members, so that had to change...

Strictly skirmish for me. To the Strongest is big battles, yes?

Yes pretty big, perhaps 50-150 minis a side depending on the army.

And I'm currently thinking of raising a force from the Tarshite 'Bagnot Shieldwal Regiment', part of the provincial army of Lunar Tarsh.

All this talk of Runequest and Glorantha has been no go for my gaming projects, as it has added another one.

As an aside, would someone be able to enlighten me as to the 'appearance of the Lunar forces ? When I played RQ 2, all civilised forces had a Greek feel, the last time I played (pen and paper) they had more of a Roman feel. Current inter-web research on my part shows that they have a mix of Greek and Early Italian Tribes (I have a liking for Etruscan Military History and Gaming). So which is it?

Fortunately, Tarsh is clearly based on the 5-7century dark age forces, with the usual RQ Hoplite and specialist stuff thrown in - they have 'Sun Dome' in there province, so have a regiment of Yelm Pikemen included.

And if your thinking skirmish, and you don't mind a suggest - Dragon Rampant.

Uses units, but can be as little as 1 figure in these, and usually no more than 12. Force can be anywhere from 4-70 figures depending on how you build your force, not set lists just guides are given.

I'm planning on starting the Bagnot Regiment with 2 spear units (12 figures each, trained to fight in shield wall) and 1 offensive unit, again 12 figures but sword/axe and shield armed as the regiment has a history of aggressive action. And that should cover about half the force, Houscarls and Heroes for the rest.

Dragon Rampant looks like a great set of rules and would adapt well to Glorantha.

In "Tarsh Wars" the Tarshite army looks very Late Roman.  YGMV!   Lunar military fashion changes every time there is a new book out.  :-)  In any case the Lunar army is very large and diverse.  The units I'm using tomorrow are mostly Dara Happans and have a very Assyrian look ('cos they are my Assyrians).  ;-)

Agreed! Orlanthi have gone from Celts to Vikings to a mish-mash. Personally, I'm using a mix, Celts, Norse, Trojans, etc and I'm counting on painting to tie them together somehow.

I purchased Dragon rampant, and I'm inclined to agree that the rules would work very well for Gloranthan games.

Glorantha - excellent! Thanks, LeadAsbestos, for putting this together.

I'm away from my miniatures for a few weeks, but when I get back to them, I'll be digging out some miniatures I've been gathering over the last year or so for a warband or two - Lunar and/or Orlanthi for me, I think. It depends on what I'm hoarding in the lead pile! I've always wondered if it might be possible to do some "organic" elves as well, using old GW Wood Elf plastics - dryads as well as elves. I'll have to think about that. No particular system in mind. I used to roleplay RQ with friends in my teens, so maybe it will just be a nostalgia thing for me. Looking forward to it, in either case, and to seeing what everybody else contributes to the thread!

Speaking of contributions to the thread - bigredbat, I'm liking those spider-centaurs a lot. Reaper, right? I've seen them in the catalogue, and I've always thought they were cool, but couldn't find a gaming use for them. Of course they make perfect sense as opponents for my Orlanthi or Lunar band! Nice work!

Scorpion-men, your Scorpion/man centaur, are a mainstay of Chaos in the RQ setting, though not so much as Broo - animal headed beastmen and carry diseased and worship plague and contagion.

It's possible that Lunar's 'might' use Scorpion men, though the are probably a step to far on the Chaos front - as are Broo, but a raiding party against Lunar of Orlanthi would work fine.

So it looks like my Lunar Forces will have an early Italian vibe, allows for the 'Roman' influence, whilst not moving too far away from the 'Classical' feel of old RQ.

Regarding rules... With the right sabot bases and the figures mounted on suitable individual bases you can use the Dragon Rampant rules for a skirmish feel and then sabot up to play big battles in 'To The Strongest'

Figure count wise I looked at DR and with around 60-80 figures in a once you could make a 140pt for TtS without too much struggle.... Each base is a unit, with spare figures for heroes and Leaders
