Preferred mass battle SF rules?
« on: July 16, 2016, 11:37:56 PM »
I meany like a company or larger force of AFVs with supporting Artillery, Aerospace, Infantry (multiple types,) and even naval units, type size battle.

I have Dirtside II but what else is out there that allows those size actions while differentiating between general categories of weapons.  Baccus had a set for larger battles IIRC but someone else has that now.

Anyway, what do you use for large massed battles for SF games?

If you're going no that big I love Epic Armageddon - you can 'reskin' a force fairly easily if you want to represent something other than GW forces.

Having said that, I don't think it has naval rules (I've certainly never played them).

I really enjoy Future War Commander. It gives you a great combined arms warfare experience. And it can be used for any scale though I like it best in 6-15mm.

I use Future War Commander for really large fights, Dirtside 2 for slightly smaller battles (2-3 companies per side) and for roughly company size AFV-heavy battles I like Tomorrow's War.  TW has a pretty solid set of vehicle rules that tend to get overlooked in favor of infantry firefights, but I find they play fast and smooth as long as you aren't mixing in much infantry at the same time (at which point the game does bog down some).

I have a copy of Laserstorm (from Wargame Vault) and I've been eyeing Horizon Wars; but haven't looked too hard at either one 'cos I'd need a gaming situation where Epic: Armageddon wouldn't be more appropriate. (Spass mariens versus orxxx in the grimdork far future) One of the best games GW produced, in my subjective opinion, and ably tweaked and given further army lists by the team at Tactical Command. :)

my vote would go for epic 40k, but some units (deathstrike missiles) are too overpowered

In 10mm I use Alpha Strike, though I haven't used the rules for artillery and aerospace yet.

For 28mm sci-fantasy-ridulousness (aka 40k Apocalypse that is actually fun) I use the first edition of Warpath (basically KoW in space).  No artillery or aerospace, but it does have flyers tanks, infantry, etc, in a ruleset that is super fast-playing, easy to mod (we've made rules for Titans) and fun.

I recently bought the Crucible. I haven't tried it yet but it looks promising.
