Thanks guys, lot of useful links and ideas in there :D

@Sir_theo - I'd heard of Twilight, but the setting hadn't done anything for me so I hadn't bothered to look at the figures. Big mistake on my part, and I see an order in my near future. If not for livestock, some of those figures would make ideal pack animals for an SF adventure party.

@vermis - I may have the smaller Heresy bugs, and I'm pretty sure I ordered a Terror Grub as part of the Kickstarter, so it will eventually turn up. Andy has a sale on at the moment, so I may take the opportunity to pick up a few more of the smaller ones.

There was a thread this morning about someone selling plastic Dr Who figures, which reminded me that I have a set of the plastic slug like things from one of the magazines. I haven't seen them for a while, but they should make a nice cheap herd at some point.

Some space chickens are now definitely on the shopping list (so to speak ;D)

I bought a tub of cheap (£5) 'Wild Animals' from Sainsbury's Store. I only wanted the elephant & crocodiles for an African game in 28mm. The rest of the animals were different scales, however I was loath to just chuck them. The cheaters had their tails cut off & were then painted blue. Similar small alterations to the others & I now have a lot of alien beasts.
Poundland had some dragons. The wings were removed (pulled off) & the holes filled in. A quick paint job & I have a herd of elephant sized beasties.

Imperial Assault does a Bantha (sadly with rider, and flipping expensive).
Get the WotC one then. Still has a rider but way cheaper and will do the job just fine.

The comments about banthas remind me that Rafm has Martian gashants in their Space: 1889 line

Conversion wise you can find GW tyranid devourer guns cheaply online (or probably from people on here) and they make great alien heads. I swear even a regular cow toy with those things for a head will probably look creepy alienish.

The resident mad viking doc. made some space cow beetles some time ago from cheap toy ones.

I've several small toys I thought would be useful. Some of the smaller Avatar beasts, for instance, as HUGE livestock, and you can get lovely glow of of those.  lol

The new Reaper Bones Gorgon model would make for excellent grox, and cheap enough in plastic to make a herd. I always wanted to run a 40K game where grox stampede...

Take a dig around the Reaper catalog sometime.  Lots of D&D fantasy critters make good xeno-fauna.  Gorgons for cattle, cockatrix for chickens, etc.

Only rabbits.  Or maybe jackalopes.

The notion of oversize livestock is an interesting one.

I picked up a toy sheep (important to add the word "toy" there  ;D) on Saturday. I think it's roughly 1/26 scale (about 3.5cm tall), so towers over a 28mm figure.

However, even so out of scale it looks okay. The chicken above actually looks okay in the scene, and something that you'd get away with on the table. I think there probably is a point at which it would be too out of scale, but I'll maybe see what's around in 54mm as well. I think in that scale the sheep would be roughly the same size as a human, so about horse sized.

Dinosaur sized cows and sheep, however, may be a step too far lol

Thanks for the suggestions. Reaper bones is not my favourite material, but it's difficult to beat in terms of cheap. I haven't found the Dr Who figures yet, but I believe they were Cybermats

CP Models Cave Lizards from their 15mm Fantasy range:

Might make cool crazy space chickens...!

Those look a lot like Gizka from Star Wars...
