Fantasy flight anounces RuneWars
« on: August 05, 2016, 06:56:25 PM »
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/8/5/runewars-the-miniatures-game/

I'm not going to spend a lot of words repeating what they said but it looks like sabot movement trays that interlock in squares of four. The main game mechanic appears to be based on the use of twin dials you set to plan your units actions at the start of the turn, so this is fantasy formation X-wing really. They also go for upgrade cards much like x-wing though there don't appear to be any categories upgrades are divided into. (unless the icons for that are cropped out of the previews on purpose)

The models themselves look generic but decent, the larger ones have more character about them. They come unpainted and if the x-wing miniatures are anything to go by they will be decent plastic quality but very expensive. (no licencing on these though so maybe not as bad as x-wing?)

Perhaps they'll be about the same price as the Descent miniatures.

Looks pretty cool .I do wonder if they're going to pimp out their x wing mechanics a little too much , but then why not use what is essentially a rank and flank system to play rank and flank.
never trust a horse, they make a commitment to shoes that no animal should make.

Yeah this'll be...interesting.  I think the movement markers are quite a good idea with something so rank-n-file but I agree this could be really too much X-wing.

So, Wizards went after X-wing with Star Trek Attack Wing, & then did D&D Attack Wing. Now, FFG/Asmodee counters that with Rune Wars?

Brilliant!

It's all pretty much fancied up Carwars anyhow.

And I think BattleLore 2nd the Rune-Command-Colors-Memoir-Borg-FLANK-card edition is fun, I am glad to see a more conventional tabletop army game pop out. Even Borg moved on to make his own MechWarrior light sort of thing with Abbadon..

Hey FFG, Steve Jackon pretty much cocked up bringing back Ogre as a plasyic/metal minis game, so maybe you guys should look into cloning and improving THAT classic idea? Or look into a spiritual-successor/modified clone of Crimson Skies or even Renegade Legions?

Even Confrontation looks like fair game right now.

Or a new AT-3 type of thing only less expensive and more box-playset oriented.

Or do a new HeroScape? I love huge colored hex boards. Shame Milton Bradley and Wizards let that die.

Well FFG did basically come up with a licence to print money with x wing, so i suppose why not try everything you can with the mechanic and see if that magic sticks around? :)

If the mechanic works...roll with it, just off the top of my head we have:

Wings of Glory WW1 (the real origin of it I think)
Wings of Glory WW2
X-Wing
X-Wing Armada
Star Trek
The D&D dragons one
Sails of Glory
Tanks (from Battlefront) etc.

And now we have another one...the hits just keep coming! lol

I was teaching my cousin to play X-Wing when he pretty much said...quite loudly, "isn't this pretty much Carwars"?  And I thought about it and he was right.

The real kick in the pants for me was that back in college I got bored one summer and put together some 1/72 scale WW1 plane kits.  I knocked out some simple rules which were shockingly similar to what would become the Wings of War rules a bit later.  Basically players planned moves using icons on a piece of paper...moved simultaneously and resolved shooting etc.  Altitude was measured using blocks of balsa wood etc.   lol

If only I'd jumped on the idea!

And then there's tanks, which is so simple me and my opponent thought we were missing something! (damn fun tho)

???  I've played a lot of Car Wars and a fair amount of X-Wing, and I don't see that at all.  They're about as dissimilar a set of rules as, say, Napoleon's Battles and Warhammer 40K.

A turning key, set speeds, maneuvers, the upgrade cards in X-wing act like a cut down version of the upgrade/customization system in Carwars...pretty similar.

And I say that having not played any 40K since 5th edition and having no idea how it stacks up to Napolean's Battles but assuming a 40K battle would have slightly more psychics and armor in it.
