20mm Prohibition era
« on: August 13, 2016, 05:44:15 PM »
Greetings
I am thinking about putting something together for this Era.
Why 20mm? because I already have a lot of DPM city buildings in this scale.
I would need to make/get brick streets and prohibition Era things to make them work.
Any suggestions on that I would be grateful for.

I do not have figures or cars but have done some research.
I found that CP models makes Mobsters and police, Elmhiem makes Gangsters and G-men.
CP Models also have some civilians but they are not quite the ERA

As far as cars and trucks the only scale match that I found were "Matchbox" Classic cars.
I actually have one in my collection "Classic cars 1914 Prince Henry" and it seems to look pretty good next to my Dark future and Elmhiem mini's I have.
Only problem with them is they are 1906-1914 that are maybe a little old for this ERA but with a stretch could work.

I would like suggestions on rules. The Chicago Way seems to be a good choice if I just get the rule book.
I was thinking also about using FUBAR and adapting them as I do use them for other games and they are easy to modify for what you want.

Thanks for any suggestions.
No amount of planning will ever replace dumb luck.

So what you're looking for is a niche era/theme (the amount of gangster models is rather limited even in 28mm) and an even more niche scale. You're certainly not making it easy for yourself, and I really like that.
Did some googling for makers of 20mm in general (there really aren't a lot of them), and while the vast majority stick to soldiers and war, I found a few things, in addition to what you already found.

http://www.magistermilitum.com/scale/20mm.html#order=name&limit=36&p=1&dir=ASC&cat[]=59554&cat[]=61918 Magister Militum has a small range of civilians from the 1930-40s. While they're designed for British railways (thus all the conductors and Bobbies), the men in suits and the workers would look right at home in the lawless streets of Chicago or doing some shady work down by the concrete factory.

http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=COCM This range is old, and has a somewhat bigheaded style (which I like, but it's not for everyone), but contains a fairly large amount of gangster-era models, from mobsters and cops to dames and innocent bystanders. They even have a handful of vehicles and riders.

And as for vehicles and streets, have you tried searching for models in the 1:72 scale? Again, there's not tons of options when it comes to civilian stuff, but even a quick google search for "1: 72 car model kit" brought up quite a few suitable cars (like this beauty https://www.modelhobbies.co.uk/shop/citroen-traction-avant-11cv-72273-p-17621.html)

As mentioned already check for 1:72 scale figures but you could also look for railroad OO scale stuff.

As far as rules, I'd suggest trying our Pulp Alley rules. They are perfect for Prohibition era scenarios.

And you can try it for free. Download our free Quickstart rules and check it out! -- https://store.pulpalley.com/

If you use Pulp Alley, you'll probably want to use optional rules like Gritty, Heartless and Harsh, or it will feel weird when your mob boss gets sprayed down with a tommygun half a dozen times and then gets back up again.

Force20 does 20mm G-men and gangsters and has two packs of dock figures that are perfect for prohibition scenarios. They are also sold thru Elhiem Figures.
