One could also use spaceships that were captured from aliens when they tried to invade the earth. You don't have to understand how something works to use it.

As I recall, the pods in the original book version of "War of the Worlds" were fired from a big gun on Mars.

Quite wise really, as if the invasion fails the angry, vengeful humans only have a bunch of spent rounds lying about, and not anything that can get back to Mars.
