Party on Horror Beach, amphibious monsters & terrain set
« on: August 28, 2016, 06:10:37 PM »
Recent project, set of amphibious monsters and seaside terrain done for as a loaner for a friend.  Local RPG group needed them for a Pathfinder game that was heavy on the pirates, but I built them (especially the terrain) for added utility in straight minis games like SoBH/Deep Wars/etc.

The beasties are all Reaper Bones figs mounted on 30mm, 45mm, and 60mm bases.

The 60mm tree stands are the old 3rd edition 40K plastics.  Took me this long to get around to painting the ones that came in the core box.  The treasure chest objective and sandworm maw "trap" are Reaper Bones.  The "searching the trees" chart the GM used was 1d6 roll, with a 6 finding the loot and a 1 resulting in the sandworm popping up to take a bite and then wandering around to randomly maul other models till killed/chased off by enough damage.  Sadly, I'd sold off my purple worm corpse conversion before the game or he could have borrowed that for when it was killed.

Quite like the monster figs, especially the big shark.  Almost enough to make me want to buy the other metal sculpts of them that Reaper makes.  Only this one available in plastic right now.

The Tiik fish-men/not-sahuagin would make nice silurid proxies in Malifaux or variant Deep Ones in mythos gaming.  I was a little surprised by how large the champion fig was, really dwarfs even the four-armed baron.

Cool, just needs some meddling kids
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

That could be a more exciting close to one of the '60s Beach Movies. Be that as it may, the Fishy Folk are all BEAUTIFULLY painted creations...nice background scenery also. VERY WELL DONE!

Anyone make a good set of Sonny and Cher minis?  :)

OMFG I didnt realise those fishmen were available in bones.

Yep, and the tiiks are all under $3.00.  Even the big shark is under $6.  Bit of a shame they only did one of the two tiik warriors in plastic, but the two sculpts are very, very similar so not too much of a loss there.  I do wish they'd do the tiik champion in metal at some point, the sword's a bit thin for flexing issue when cast in Bones.  Maybe someday?

There are also a slew of actual Deep Ones coming in Bones when the 3rd KS stuff arrives.  Worth keeping an eye out for.

Sigh.  Thanks for the compliments, but they're going to wind up being more dead weight for me since they won't see any more use in our RPG campaign and aren't moving on ebay.  Typically issue with aquatic monsters, they're a little too niche and games like Deep Wars haven't managed to change that much.  Maybe I can find a use for them in some convention game or something and justify the painting.  One night's use wasn't worth it as is.

One night's use and the sincere applause of your peers.  That's something, at least.

Hope you find a home or subsequent use for them: they are terrific, and much better than anything in The Horror of Party Beach, for example.

Well, fair point.  And the adventure was pretty entertaining.  I was running an NPC-ish hireling character and managed to get mauled by the sandworm and then messily devoured by the big shark-man, which was fun.  I like doing stand-in work, it feels more like acting than playing a regular player character.

That movie is only watchable on Mystery Science Theater, but with the Satellite of Love crew it becomes one of their best efforts.  :)
