Help needed- how to unstick superglue?
« on: September 10, 2016, 07:35:15 AM »
I based  some figures years ago on pennies which I now consider too small and want to rebase them. Is there a foolproof method of unsticking superglue I can apply to the bases which will free them up?
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Large temperature differences usually do the trick. Boiling water is best. Putting them for a night in the freezer might work as well.

I use Dettol as paintstripper and that dissolves it as well.

Ah. The problem is they are painted and I don't want to wreck the paint job

Heat the pennies with a flame, lighter/candle etc and you can pop the figures off.

Put boiling water into a saucer, stand mini with penny base in boiling water. After about 15/20 seconds hold mini firmly and gently 'twist' penny base using pliers. Penny 'should' pop away. Practise on sacrificial mini!

Edit: Paul beat me -essentially the same technique  :D

Well it worked 99%. Out of about 50 minis I have 2 that simply won't come off the pennies. If I had kept trying they would have broke at the ankles. Ah well.

For those few really stubborn ones.
Put the minis in a freezer for about 15 mins.
Take two flat-nosed pliers and put them on opposite sides of the mini's base. Twist both pliers down briskly. In all probability you'll 'launch' the figure so make sure you have something soft for it to land on.

Slide a blade between the figure and the penny. Twist. The figure will come free.

Yes, I de-base using a stiff blade. Works on everything - impact adhesive, two part epoxy, superglue, whatever.

If a bit of the underlying base material comes off you can always just trim it a bit.

I did once have a couple of figures I had to cut loose with a razor saw. No idea what they were stuck down with (or to).
