Looking for some apes
« on: September 16, 2016, 01:05:37 PM »
Anyone know any manufacturer that makes good 28mm scale gorillas (both giant and normal are relevant)? There are so many ape models out there, but I'm finding it hard to track down just a gorilla that's not a cyborg, wearing clothes etc.
I know a few brands: Reaper has a few (but only two that isn't also a demon, cowboy, cyborg etc), and Khurasan makes a giant ape in 15mm scale (which they claim will look fine as a normal ape in 28mm). Foundry has a nicely realistic gorilla,  but you can only get them as a set of two identical models or in a big bundle, which puts me off a bit. The white gorilla for Frost Grave is a bit too monstrous for what I'm going for. Anyone got any tips? I like to see what options there are. Other great apes are also welcome: I'll mostly use these as Tarzian's apes, mangani, who are a fictional species described as man-sized,  something between a chimp and a gorilla but capable of using a vocal language.

Northstar used to stock Baboons
http://www.northstarfigures.com/list.php?cat=154&man=87&page=2

Heroclix have the super apes. A Baboon, Gorilla and Orangutan? Forget how to spell that! OOkk!

The Heroclix Gorilla looks a little small in 28mm. But the Baboon is a nice pose and good size for 28mm.

Otherworld has just released some gorilla miniatures.

Fornlorn Hope Games sells some chimpansees.

Think Acheson Creations makes apes.

Surely they are more options available

I've just got myself some of the Otherworld Miniatures ones.
I think they are very nice, and Sally 4th now stock them.

Eureka has chimpanzees, too.

If you're looking for highly intelligent apes of a fictional species, might the Savage Core simians, available from Warlord, do?  You'd have to cut away their weapons.
Back from the dead, almost.

Ive got a small lot of these left over after a project if you want them.

The Savage Core simians are great, but A I already have them, and B they're much, much too small to fit the giant ape role. As a rule of thumb, anything smaller than an average adult human makes for a poor Tarzan ape, and an even worse giant ape.
The Otherworld apes are the closest to what I'm looking for. The heads look a bit small, but not by much.

We just made a plain, large gorilla using the body of the flying Gorilla we made for Fanticide.
Drop me a line at nivr@eurekamin.com.au and I can send a picture.

We have a Giant Ape being sculpted by Ernst right now. Looking splendid. It will sit on a 50mm base and cast in resin. Late 2016, early 2017 release.
