Termite Mounds
« on: February 08, 2009, 01:45:10 PM »
The surprise Christmas present hit this year was Far Cry 2, which my brother bought for me out of the blue, and it has proven very addictive...

So anyway, I was wondering around this fictional slice of Africa and found some rather picturesque termite mounds. I liked them so much I decided to build my own.

Now I don't normally really do terrain, but inspired by some of the stuff I've seen here I thought I'd give the old CD terrain thing a try. Bear in mind I'm pretty new at this type of thing, so don't laugh too much.

Old CD, some dead pens and tops from old glue tubes.

A bit of Miliput to create the shapes.

Them some Polyfilla for texture, and some stones on the ground.

The finished article with paint and a bit of grass.

Some Germans turn up to investigate the new terrain feature.

OMG that is the most ridiculous piece of **** I've ever seen  ;)

Seriously:
Fantastic idea with the pens to create the basic shapes. What kind of reddish brown did you use for the earth??

Great stuff. I recently started keeping those blue lids from my used up Crazy-Glue Gel, in case I ever came up with an idead to use them. You have just given me my first idea!! Thanks. Great work for a so-called beginner!!

Thanks, folks.

Argonor, you cheeky monkey, the base colour is GW Bestial Brown, but messed about with various washes and drybrushed highlights. Oddly, the camera has disagreed with it. With the naked eye it looks much less dark, and not so red. Not sure why that is.

Marvellous. If I'm totally honest the wip shots seemed to bear out your commentary and I couldn't really see where you were going but the final piece really is excellant :-* :-* :-*

Plynkes:
the wizard of Africa centered modeller and gamer!

What's up next: Kilimadjaro maybe or the whole lake Victoria eeerr..... Wittelsbach!

very nice termites mounds, and very realistic, too! Nice grass, too!
The proportions are excellent. Note that some can reach the height of 4 meters!!!
Also they obstruct line of vision, as well!
colour: very nice!

[terracotta shades should be also suitable. usually soils in those semi-arid tropical and subtropical areas of Africa are rather more reddish, since the contain increased percentage of iron. but this doesnot spoil the general effect! ]

Those germans, excellent, too!
Have we seen them before? I cannot recall them, by heart.

They've been painted quite a long time, but as they have yet to feature in any games I think that you may be right, and that I haven't photographed them before. They are the command figures for my Schutztruppe Askari.
