Monster Squad (wolfie added 11-25-16)
« on: November 13, 2016, 02:45:58 AM »
So, I've been working on Studio Miniatures excellent new Kickstarted minis.

Mummy

Frankenstein's Monster

Dracula

Gillman.  The water effect resin wasn't quite dry when I took this pic.  It should dry clear.

Wolfman WiP

They were obviously modelled after the 80's Movie 'Monster Squad'.  I've not seen anyone mention that yet.

Sculpts are pretty dead on!

Well... IMO Wolfman and Dracula are dead on. Frank and mummy are more generic (compatible with the movie designs, but neither dead-on nor notably specific to them). Gillman is nowhere even close, which is a shame since his(?) design was the real scene stealer in the movie.
History viewed from the inside is always a dark, digestive mess, far different from the easily recognizable cow viewed from afar by historians.

Gillman is nowhere even close, which is a shame since his(?) design was the real scene stealer in the movie.

Studio's "gillman" rather more resembles The Creature from the Black Lagoon.  But the Creature was Universal Studios' own creation (whereas all the others came from folklore or public domain literature), so when HBO made Monster Squad that was the one they had to disguise most.  I'm not sure how they got away with using Jack Pierce's design for Frankenstein's monster, though: Hammer had had to turn somersaults to avoid infringing Universal's trademark.

I think the Monster Squad origin of this Dracula was mentioned on the thread about the Kickstarter.

Anyway, lovely to see them painted up.  Do please show us the Wolfman again when he's finished, supervike.

Yes, I should have commented on the painting in my first post.

The red on Drac's cape and collar looks almost electric. Really nails the contrast with the black.

My hands-down favorite is Frankenstein's monster. I love the blending between brown and green in the flesh tones. Masterfully done, and gives him this wonderful old-school look: like a "Famous Monsters of Filmland" cover painting.

As a kid in the 80's I was a fan of the original Creature from the Black lagoon monster (retro as it was then), and I loved "The Monster Squad" in no small part because their version of the Creature was an absolutely fantastic modernization of the original. One of those rare great "remake" style redesigns that improved and refined with real love for the original, instead of trying to ambivalently leave the original behind.

I was slightly disappointed in the Gillman's sculpt.  I thought they were trying to just recreate "The Creature from the Black Lagoon".  So, at the same time these were on the way, I also ordered 4A's excellent "The Creature"  Which is a certainly a ringer of a sculpt

Anyhow, when I realized these Studio Miniatures were really paying more of an homage to the Monster Squad, I began to like the little Gillman so much more.  But, I agree,  it does vary from the movie.  The actual design in the movie is pretty incredible.

Still, glad you all liked them, and thank you for the comments.
