Scanian War
« on: March 27, 2019, 01:05:08 PM »
I notice Helion are bring out a book on the Scanian War of 1675 – 1679 shortly.

https://www.helion.co.uk/charles-xi-war.html

Just wondered what other sources are available for uniforms and flags etc?

I have always had a soft spot for this era circa Charles XI of Sweden. It would be also nice to utilise Northstars very nice 1672 range if possible.

The book is in English and is the best research available

I did a Scanian War project with some fellow gamers from Stockholm a few years back. One of them gave me this picture of Swedish uniform as well as a very informative illustrated text about the Danish uniforms. I only have it in paper, but I can scan it and mail it to you if you are interested.

You can see some of my miniatures here

If you know which regiments you want to do, I can provide you scans of uniforms and flags. Here is also some useful info in English and Swedish:

Interesting thread here, I have had an interest in doing something on the Scanian War but never too sure where to start, so some good material here. :)

Nothing gained but glory by GMT games is a great boardgame featuring all the battles of the Scanian War. Besides being a really good game in it self if supplies you with well researched orders of battles as well as maps. The only thing missing is information about uniforms :)

Thanks Erik and Traveller for your help. I have really just started researching this period and the Dutch War so I have yet to decide if this will become another of my many (some would say too many) wargaming projects  :)

One interesting aspect of the Scanian War was the guerilla war against the Swedes in the south of Sweden . The guerillas can be divided in two categories, Snapphanar-basically armed peasants and Friskyttar-Irregulars organised by the Danes. Beside the battles between regular forces this guerilla war went on both before and after the Scanian War. It was extremely brutal and the Swedish practice of impaling(like Vlad Dracul did) Snapphane prisoners have an almost medieval feel to the guerilla war. Still today there is resentment towards Swedish authority in the south due to, mainly, the atrocities during the Scanian War.
