Converting Rules to a Grid and Smaller Gaming Space

A question came up on the AMW forum on Yahoo about how people go about converting miniatures rules to a grid or scaling a game down so it can be played in a smaller space. I know these subjects are anathema to some people, but this is my process. I used Neil Thomas' Wargaming Nineteenth Century Europe 1815–1878 rules as an example.

You are not going to find any sweet pictures, just rectangles, arrows, and square grids. Sorry, no eye candy.
