Book on US Army experience in Okinawa
« on: December 10, 2016, 05:21:23 PM »
My wife's dad won a bronze star commanding an Army unit of Quad .50 AA Halftracks on Okinawa but we know little else about it.

Having awoken an interest in history in my wife she wants to know what books would give her an understanding of what her dad experienced in WW2.

In order I am asking for help in finding books detailing be experiences of:

US Army half track AA units on Okinawa (unlikely but I can hope)

US Army troops on Okinawa

Anything that might help my wife get insight into how her dad came him "different" then he left (something my mother-in-law never quite accepted.)

She never knew him before (adopted post WW2) but wants to understand what he went through.

Book suggestions requested.

Have you read the book by Robert Leckie A helmet For My Pillow? It is about his experiences in Guadalcanal  but I am sure you would find it relevant and of interest.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

You might try Okinawa Odyssey by Bob Green, which is about his experiences as an Army tank platoon officer on Okinawa.  Not quite what you are looking for but close.  Also, anything about Desmond Doss might be useful.
