(WIP) Denny's Flash Gordon Rocketship

I may be putting myself out on a limb here. I've got a lot to do yet, and i'm not sure how this is going to come together, but...

You remember the ship cup from Denny's I used in my game last month...

I washed the cup real good, than added a few minor bits. The nosecap is a Lego piece from my son's collection (kids rooms are great for finding bits). The hatch is made from craft foam. The windows are from plastic dart flights (once again from my son's room). They had a very nice retro pulp shape to them

Then it was a coat of red paint. I came very close to making this rocket silver like the serials, but I absolutely love Alex Raymond's original Flash Gordon strips so this is going to be a very colorful rocket in the end.

I had planned to finish this  over the weekend, but the paint was slow to dry, so I hope to finish it over the week.

Thanks, Rich.

I figured out what I did wrong.

Sweet "Ferrari Red", but Iīd certainly have preferred a brass or chrome look, from a purely aesthetical point of view... if you want accuracy, then of course youīve got no choice. I guess itīll look marvellous once painted. Need to build one to battle the Nazi Saucers, too.

Looks great!

I stole an otolaryngiscope probe cover from the pediatrician's office to use as a nose cone, but I still need something for a hatch and an exhaust nozzle. I do like that dart fin idea for the windows, and may use that.

I have to make a trip to Wally World today or tomorrow, and may pick up some metallic flake spraypaint for coloring. I'm thinking jade green, but red might look sweet too.

For long lasting appeal, that would probably have been the way to go. The board I'm doing, I really want to capture the four color feel of the comic strips. Even with that I won't be doing it as gaudy as Raymond's spaceships.

I should probably leave this alone, since this is not turning out how I planned, but in the interest of completion...

The real problem I had was painting it with the Krylon plastics paint. it didn't lay down well and required a ton of coats. Then it wouldn't accept any other paint. So I used vinyl. Working in a sign/print shop gives me this luxury. I actually like how the blues came out on it, but it is all a bit of a mess.

Looks like I'm in the market for a new rocket!

Except for what looks like bad cuts on the black parts, the whole thing looks like it just flew out of an Alex Raymond strip. Very pulpy!
