Wood Elves for Dragon Rampant and Oldhammer update 21.1.17
« on: December 23, 2016, 01:52:53 PM »
Afternoon all. Here are the latest figures in my slowly emerging Wood Elf army. These are old 1980s Citadel Melnibonean spearmen, led by a 1980s Elf hero (the chap with the left-handed spear). the fellow on the round base is the old 1980s Citadel Melnibonean 'Dyvim Tvar' (if that's how you spell it) after a hefty conversion - repositioned left arm, added shield, head replaced from a spare 1980s Elf cavalryman and a cloak added, with greenstuff fur to conceal where the cloak joins the body.
In Dragon Rampant, I can field these as either 1 single model unit of elite foot plus 1 full unit of elite foot or I can field the Dyvim Tvar conversion with the 5 Melniboneans to just create one elite foot unit. In WFB (version 4 and 5) the Dyvim Tvar fellow will be a champion leading a unit of armoured spearmen, of which these Melniboneans will be part.

Next up, after Christmas, more spearmen, the Tielindrion Attack Chariot, some archers and a Treeman (not necessarily in that order!)

Here's some pics for you...

Yep, that wood grain work on the shields really stand out!  :-*

Everything else is fine, too, but the shields just popped at first glance!

Thanks for all the kind comments. I was lucky enough to source a load of the original early 1990s Wood Elf waterside transfers off EBAY. I've always struggled with kite-type shields - that big expanse of flat board - getting some texture and life into it...so anyway, I had this idea of woodgrain. I know that shields tended to have leather covering so wouldn't be wood grained, but I thought it looked cool. Most of you seem to agree, so I'm gonna stick with it! I have sourced a variety of little bucklers for the archers (Dark Ages Pict/early Saxon ones) which I think will give them a unique look. I also have a bunch of unarmoured sword/spearmen who will get round or Norman-style teardrop shields which will be painted in a similar way. No more painting now til after Christmas, though!!! Am under orders!! ;)

The painting is superb. I really fancy those textures you have managed to put into the spears and shields.

Who's to say what the alien minds of Elves would find fashionable, anyways?  ;)

I dig it! I love that you changed things up and used some Melnibonean's. I've got some but they won't see paint for some time I'm afraid.

Keep up the great work.
