Ronin
« on: January 07, 2017, 02:40:48 PM »
My father who was my original wargaming opponent back in the 80s and early 90s has got back into the hobby now he's retired.
He's always had an interest in ancient Japan and so has bought a copy of Ronin by Osprey and has started doing some miniatures and scenery.
I'm not generally bothered about historicals but do like skirmish games so decided to paint up a warband of my own to give him a game and hopefully a whooping!

Decided to go with the Bandit Buntai as can't resist the baddies.

Bought some Perry Miniatures which are lovely models. Also got the North Star bandits for Christmas. They're well sculpted models but the castings were crap. Loads of flash and mould lines. Shame as they're a lot more money per figure that the Perry ones.

First of all I've painted 12 peasants.

Bases not done yet as will be doing them all together at the end.

Realised after I took these photos that the I missed the moustache on the bandit with the hammer . Its been  sorted now.

Looking good, I had to reorder my copy of Ronin because it's lost somewhere in the blackhole of the garage, looking forward to seeing more work

Really nice painting, I've got some of the North Star and Perry figures myself (the Sohei) which I'm painting up right now.  Only complaint I have about my North Star Figures is some slightly dodgy casts and one monk who has fingers that look like very long sausages.

One major piece of advice for Ronin, don't run a list entirely made up of unarmed peasants. Doing so is largely just to annoy opponents.

Thanks for the positive comments. I've started on some bandits so there will be some more variety soon.

Seven bandits now done. Three with Katanas and three with Yari. As per the peasants the bases are still to do. Also converted a banner bearer which is painted apart from the banner. I'll paint the banner after I've varnished him to save wearing the paint off.

Very cool
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Great work, Perry and Northstar appear to size up nicely together

Brilliant that's good to hear!

Yes they go well together. As I've said before it's just a shame about the dubious castings on the North Star models.

Today I've finished a Ronin model. A sword for hire who clearly has seen and done it all before. Bit more detail that the regular troops as befits his status.

I also think I'm going to go back to the spear shafts and sticks the bandits have and add a bit of texturing. I think the flat colour needs a bit of something.
