Well done!  Wish my old Ral Partha and Der Kriegspieler looked that good!  But sadly with my "non-painting" skills I end buying painted second hand stuff.

Okay, latest additions to the collection are a Southron (Haradrim), mounted and foot version, and an Easterling (Variag), mounted and foot version.

I was staying closer to the literary colour schemes than the movie versions (as are the models), with the Southron having an Arabian feel, clothed in red with brazen armour and the Easterling looking like a Mongol rider and having earthier dark colours with a bit of red (Tolkein doesn't really specify the colours they wear, but I thought I'd stay close-ish to the Haradrim theme). I also tried to make sure the horses looked the part as well, as an Arabian thoroughbred and Mongol pony respectively.

In the films they are a little different, with the Southrons really only depicted as the Mumakil riders and escorts, dressed in black, and the Easterlings being the marching soldiers Frodo and Sam narrowly escape from at the Black Gate, who are clothed in red and ... I don't know what they're based on really ... Turkish? Byzantine? Chinese? Who can tell.

AWESOME brushwork, CONGRATULATIONS!!!  :-*

I always loved to see the same character in both on foot and mounted miniatures!  :D

Brilliant as ever!

Great work on the horses and their trappings in particular. And the highlighting of the reds is sublime.

I think I recently acquired that foot Easterling in a job lot of hobgoblins. I think he'll be painted up as such - no point going for a human look now!

The latest are WONDERFUL continuations of the FINE WORK done on all your other creations. They are all pieces I have never seen before, which adds to their attraction. VERY WELL DONE once more!

Wow, I love your colors on the Southrons and Easterlings!  In fact, these are all really cool.  I have a big box of these minis, that has been sitting around here since the late 80's, your thread is really inspiring me to move them up in the painting queue!

Ah thanks guys. It's been a real pleasure doing this ongoing job, since I've been able to see a lot of old models - some familiar, most not - from what I consider to be GW's Golden Age. It's interesting comparing the LOTR imagery then to the movie versions now.

They're lots of fun to paint and there's plenty more on the way later!

Splendid painting! I love that southron. It's really a shame, they don't produce this range anymore!

Really enjoyed this thread for the excellent painting and the memories brought back of this classic range.

As I recall they did a troll in a rather odd crouching position but I got quite a few as it was the only accurate Tolkienesque troll I could find i.e. scaly skin and equipped with a hammer and round shield as per the description of the battle of the Black Gate.

They did quite a nice ent as well.

There was also another troll that wasn't generally released, but was much better posed, if smaller:

I used to have a brace of them. I think they survived into modern times, but I must have put them somewhere "safe" at some point. God knows where they are now.
