10mm ACW - Pendraken Miniatures - WIP
« on: January 20, 2017, 01:54:12 PM »
Along with (most) other members of The Old Guard Wargames Club (North Yorkshire), I'm currently building a 10mm ACW force as part of a group project during 2017. And, like a lot of others, I'm a bit of a butterfly when it comes to sticking to one thing at a time. So I've decided that during 2017 I'm only going to work on 10mm ACW, and smaller bits for games like Star Wars X-Wing or Star Trek Attack Wing (both being buy-and-play games that I tend to only add small areas of paint to pre-painted models or do a quick repaint, myself).

I started this ACW project at the back end of December, and managed this lot before necessity meant I had to work on some 28mm bits for a Club all-day event.

This last week I've got back to working on the project, and have managed to add this to the group

The second, 4-base infantry unit is now well on the way to being 3/4 complete, and I'm hoping to get it finished before Sunday night. Then I'm to work on an artillery battery and limber. Then will base the whole lot. After that, probably more infantry as I plan on another four units for this brigade.

Further info can be found over on my blog: http://nevermindthejankers.blogspot.co.uk/

Or updated on the Pendraken Miniatures Forum.

Cheers
Roy

Looking good Roy. The slightly mixed uniforms works well, they look like a unit, but not factory fresh!

I like the density of troops you have, are these 30mm frontage bases?

I do like the colour contrast you have used - so important for the smaller scale. These look really nice and good to see 10mm appearing here.

These do look good. What's the total time input to get them to this stage?

The second infantry unit painted up. I kept to more of a uniformed look to this unit, just to be different.

Thanks everyone. It is much appreciated.

I like the density of troops you have, are these 30mm frontage bases?

25mm frontage.

Here's the full info. (another chap asked over on my blog, so I have the details to hand)
Base Sizes -

Officer on Horse - 25mm round

Officer on Foot - 20mm round

Wagon - 25mm frontage x 40mm depth

Cavalry - 25mm frontage x 30mm depth

Infantry (formed) - 25mm frontage x 20mm depth

Infantry (skirmish) - 50mm frontage x 20mm depth

[Artillery - tbc, but I reckon the same as the cavalry]

The bases are all 2mm MDF, in this case bought from Pendraken Miniatures.

What rules are you using ?

The club I'm a member of will probably go with either Black Powder / Glory Hallelujah, Pickett's Charge, or one of the Fire & Fury books.
I'll probably end up playing them at some point with these miniatures, but I also bought the TooFatLardies They Couldn't Hit An Elephant rules as a .pdf (as it was cheaper than the other books). I haven't played any of the rules yet, however.

What's the total time input to get them to this stage?

That's a difficult one to answer, as I'm quite the slow painter.

Not counting priming, then undercoating, each figure is receiving around 12 different colours of paint (some areas get two layers, such as the uniforms) and I'm having to swap to a smaller brush to paint the fingers and facial features. I'm also painting them in group batches, so further mixing up my time calculations. Then there's drying time between paint coats.

I reckon I could paint a single figure in 20 minutes. That's an undercoated figure to what you see in the photos.

26th February 2017: Project slowed down due to club(s) commitments and real life.

Plus painting Cowboys, learning rules and playing 28mm, playing Star Wars X-Wing

I'm going to increase the amount of bases to the above (painted) infantry units - 7 bases & 5 bases

Progressing nicely Roy and nice brushwork 8)

I had a big blast with my ACW 15/18's over Christmas and January but then realised that HOTLEAD was coming up in late March and I had not started my Woodland Indian village required for my game there .......

Nice work. I am painting some 12mm ACW and I like the bright results that you are getting. It looks like you are inking, but I wondered what ratio of ink to water you are using to keep that brightness?

Thanks FK, Minden, and Norm :)

FK. I'm more of a dog man, myself. So more a case of the dog's doo-dahs.

Minden', another skirmish from King Philip's War?

Norm. I'm just painting over a black undercoat with undiluted paints, surprisingly. I'm using bright colours and leaving the undercoat visible, the 'black line' method, but I've not actually used any inks or washes at all on these miniatures - which is what I normally would do. Simply layering two coats of paint over a black undercoat, using a mix of GW and Foundry and Vallejo acrylic paints. Its probably a trick of the lighting and camera, especially on the Vallejo blacks or dark greys that have given a shiny end result.
