BTR-40
« on: February 24, 2017, 12:48:37 PM »
Next plan is solidly out of WW2 but I'm going to use it in Bolt Action as a 'What if lend lease didn't happen' 1947

BTR-40 APC and BTR-40A AA vehicle.

Hull is almost done.  Pics to follow

I'll probably end up with a BDRM-1 too.

Looking forward to seeing what you make.

Good news indeed. I've held off on buying a BTR-40 so far. A BRDM-1 would be greatly appreciated. Of course if you are going all Russian on us how about a GAZ-69 jeep. No bugger makes one despite their near ubiquity post war.

Hull is done mostly.  just needs a tidy when the filler is dry.

If you're taking an even-handed approach to the project, can I suggest a M39 Armored Utility Vehicle? Despite being designed as a gun tractor, it became an ad-hoc APC and recce vehicle in the last months of WWII and was also used in Korea.

I have myself been giving thought to a Post-WWII/Early Cold Wars scenario, which has been given a boost by the release of the new Empress U.S. figures. Pit them against the Eureka Soviets and you're off!

M39 is an interesting call - I'll check it out.
M44 is nice but a bit too silly...

That is lovely. I am glad I waited, it's a much nicer model than the Company B version.

Thanks!

Trying to make an SG43...  but it's bloody fiddly!
Next is the twin KPVT Turret.

It'll be a little compromised as the internal seats will need cutting out.
But it's only the turret floor.

Oh yes! That will fit nicely on my Stalker themed Post-Apoc. table.  :-* 8) :-*

Television is rather a frightening business. But I get all the relaxation I want from my collection of model soldiers. P. Cushing

Someone didn't plan ahead lol

A BTR-152 would be nice. Just sayin'.

Really nice work on that, we'll done.

I tend to look for light vehicles and soft skins, as their game impact is less pronounced than heavy armour. The M39 fits that profile quite well, as of course does the BTR-40.

The M44 is a bit of a beast, but the M75 or M59 might be a better fit, albeit both are a bit later in service and perhaps outside your time frame; although it's a similar one to that of the BRDM1 and of course the BTR-50.

The '45-'55 period throws up a few unusual vehicles, nice to see someone having a go at them.

I did, the APC is the main version.
The AA version will be an add on.  The idea is that you can swap between the two.
I considered making an APC 'insert' but it was too fiddly.

BTR-152 is possible....

M75/M59 are getting a bit late for my chosen time frame but the M39 is definitely possible.

Cheers all!

The M39 works for me. In parallel to your BTR-40 problems, there was a version of the M39 that mounted the U.S. Quad 50; just thought I better mention that now rather than later.

OK so my plan is this:
I'm going to do a Soviet Recon Platoon post '45 lugging around a truck full of recruits (unless I can think of anything better to replace them with)
I've got permission from my understaninding Tournament Organises (Pete Melvin of Phoenix Gaming) to let me run it in his Bolt Action Tournament

Plan is this:
1000 points Recon Platoon

2   Reg   2nd Lt   Assistant

8   Reg   Guards   5 SMG PF
8   Reg   Guards   5 SMG PF
8   Reg   Guards   5 SMG PF
8   Reg   Guards   5 SMG PF

1   Reg   BTR-40
1   Reg   BTR-40
1   Reg   BTR-40
1   Reg   BTR-40
1   Reg   BTR-40

1   Reg   BTR-40 Recce

1   Reg   BTR-40A

A very lightweight and fast raider force.  Ideally I'd like an air observer or similar but I'll manage without.
I've not got my free infantry unit but it doesn't really fit with a recon platoon.  I'll see if I can come up with anything more appropriate instead.

I jsut need to re-base all my soviets (about 200 of them) on clear bases...
Oh I also need to sculpt SG43s for the BTR-40s and RPG-2s to repalce the Panzerfausts.

Mr Jeff Trnka has agreed to cast the BTR-40s for me in exchange for the master.

Probably going to lose hard (I've not been any good at BA for years!  I used to win stuff...) but it'll be fun to build and paint.

Thoughts?
