Bye, comfort zone! - Super Dungeon Explorin'
« on: March 03, 2017, 03:00:50 PM »
Hej, last year I was asked to paint a bunch of Super Dungeon Explore figures.

SDE of course is a pretty darned popular dungeoncrawler boardgame featuring chibi/super deformed style of miniatures referencing all kinds of things, from 8 bit video games to cosplayers. Very fun little miniatures and a metric ton of expansions and whatnot.

For me it was the first time painting anything anime-looking, so quite outside of my 'comfort zone' when it comes to painting miniatures. First I was to paint a whole lot of heroes:

Those take quite a long time to paint, as they're all very different and such. All of them are painted in the colour schemes as presented in the artwork.

Right, that was the first batch. Took quite a while, but they look rather pleasing I think. :) Hope you like them as well!

Can't say that I like chibies outside of certain onlf vgames too much, but that painting really is marvellous.

Funny I just started painting some of these myself. However, mine pail into nothing in comparison to your work. Very impressive and love the bright colours.

Don't care for chibis at all, but the brush work is excellent.

Thanks very much for all the comments!  :-*

@matakishi: Cheers!

@Khadrin Stonetooth: Thanks muchly.

@Schrumpfkopf: Cheers. I can see why you wouldn't be a fan. After all a Schrumpfkopf is pretty much the exact opposite of this style of mini. :D Thanks very much. It's always extra nice when people who don't like the minis still enjoy the paintjob on them.

@mellis1644: Thanks very much. That's the cool thing about these minis - you can really look how much you can ramp up the colours AND I can get out colours I don't use as often (mostly pink and orange). Did you notice how much of a shift in painting approach it takes to paint these minis (which in part is why I called the thread what I called it)? Very, very different stuff, I find. Especially as with the latest batch I went straight from early 1980s 25mm Napoleonic Minifigs to these. :D

@Elbows: Thanks, all the nicer that you dropped a comment. :)

@Andym: Cheers, it's pretty amazing what a white basecoat can do. :D

Right, here's the next batch done right in the last week of 2016. A bunch more characters plus a bunch of pets, which are really, really cool mnis. :D

...and this brings us to the batch I'm currently working on:

Having done a ton of characters/heroes now it's time to paint some more baddies. :)

You reach levels of perfection with brush & palette that most of us can only dream of attaining. You have even managed to make the more saccharine of the minis appealing. They are a WONDERFUL collection of little characters. FANTASTICALLY WELL DONE!

@DeafNala: :D Thanks very much, Sir! Eloquently put as always.

Well, I've been away for a while, hence the lack of WIP piccies. So here's the whole Batch finished:

Hope you like them!

Very impressive painting, especially the focussed lighting is great. Not my kind of genre of miniatures, but you really made them shine.  :)
