A Vauban fort (Part 3) - Complete
« on: March 08, 2017, 10:21:00 PM »
I think there is time to present my Vauban Fort project complete.

Two years before, I managed to construct as many elements as to be able to cover a 1.80m table in a broken line, supported by a second line of fortifications. I made straight walls, bastions, ravelins, gates and 45 and 90 degrees angled corners so that they fit to any desirable layout.

Here are my previous related posts:

I decided to avoid hours of paintjob, trying to construct the whole thing from cardboard, cork and covering with printed paper I managed to work with Photoshop so as to give a realistic look. The judgement is yours.
Here is the entrance discussed in Part 1, combined with the rest of the fort elements

A bastion. All the elements are hollow, very light, yet sturdy.

I know what you think: The parapets and the walkway are very short for A Vauban construction. Yes, but this is not a maquette or a diorama reconstruction of a Vauban fort, it would be more voluminous and the whole fort complex would dominate the wargame table.
What I had in mind was to give the minimal dimensions needed for playability without... insulting completely the aesthetics of the Vauban architecture, I am a devoted fan.

Rear view of the main gate. The windows may look real, but they are paper.
The pics of these windows were taken from my visits at the old city of Nafplion.

A damaged wall and outer ravelin. The rubble is cork and earth.
Here, I would like to mention the valuable help of my colleague Miltiades, who made the finishing touch (weathering, drybrush etc).
Miltiades is an old friend with whom we alternate the roles of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, depending on whose folly is the project in progress  lol

One is amazed to see how complex and elaborate a real Vauban fort is...
And a dazzling terminology!
