American winter uniforms for 1919
« on: March 13, 2017, 08:34:03 AM »
I'm about to paint some 'winter war' American troops in the cold weather uniforms worn in for the force serving in Russia in 1919.
Can anyone help with what colours/shades I should be painting these (never having painted any US uniforms from this era before)?

Paint 'em up in standard American khaki... not far off British late war khaki.... not the green of the early doughboys/USMC. They wore British issued leather jerkins. Greatcoats likewise khaki. Headgear black fur, sometimes white crowns for snow cammo. Much will depend on what the figures have been sculpted wearing.

Cheers Mark. I'm ising the old HLBS sculpts, now sold by Tiger Miniatures.

Any particular paint you would recommend for the khaki?

Wot 'e' sed, although US khaki seems to have been a bit more mustardy in some cases.  Vallejo khaki grey is good for that although they also do a US khaki drab, which is a browner hue, probably best for WW2 wool pants.

The Shackleton winter kit was supplied by the UK, so if you are painting them for North Russia then British khaki would do the trick. Those Tiger miniatures aren't quite right for North Russia. Wrong rifles, wrong nether wear. The Brigade Games ones are a bit more accurate in some respects.

Well, as I already have the HLBS/Tiger British painted up, these will compliment them nicely, size and style wise. Tiger also work out a lot cheaper and their service is excellent (I ordered my figures late last week and they arrived today). Besides, the Americans are actually going to be used for Pulp games rather than WW1, so I'll allow myself a bit of leeway in accuracy :)

That's fair enough, just the button counter within trying to get out. :)

Ihave both Brigade and tiger ,,for North Russia the rifles are wrong for both,,since everyone used the Moisen Nagant..but fine for Siberia. And your friends won't probably know anyway. they compliment each other nicely.
