Gaming King Philip's War, 1675... (28mm)
« on: March 25, 2017, 12:45:02 AM »
Gents,

I've popped up a few pics and thoughts on getting together forces for depicting action set in the North American conflict, King Philip's War, 1675. This conflict is quite interesting in that it saw a changing of technology and tactics between the British colonist forces and the Native Indian tribes, who were generally better armed and more skilful in fighting.

It provides something of a ‘balance’ between forces and has unique aspects of its own making it different from the more popular French and Indian War conflict 80 years later.

Included are some thoughts on gathering forces and snaps of my Woodland Indians.

Cheers

Always a fan of the French and Indian War, I am really getting enthused about this earlier, offshoot conflict.

Interesting news, Mike. Um, how long is it going to take to reload a matchlock in SODTKPW?
You'll shoot your eye out, kid!

That's good new Mike  ;) ;)

Looking forward to that.

In a follow up to my original post I have uploaded part II of my look at King Philip's War. Hope you guys can pop over and maybe gleam something useful.

I would be tempted to use Warfare Miniatures generic foot armed with flintlocks. They have a casual irregular look, and if painted right could be used as Jacobites of James II. They may be intended for the 1680-90's, but I don't think they would be out of place in the 1670's.

I did look at those and some of the sculpts look really nice and suitable as you say...the firelock ones are better than the apostle musketeers...clearly a different sculptor.

How do those firelock figures size up with others such as Front Rank, Redoubt, Warlord, etc???

Front Rank is much larger than Warfare.
Warfare is probably closer to Perry and (I assume) Brigade Games.

I just read that post on your blog -- great, detailed info! I sent it on to Mike Stelzer, who will be the one writing that scenario/sourcebook.

Zippy, we're going to keep it at the same two actions in the same turn to reload, but with the Slow Reload special rule. What that means is that a figure cannot reload and fire (or fire and reload) in the same turn -- no matter how many actions he receives from his roll. It may not seem like a big difference, but most games will feature ALL figures with matchlocks or all figures with flintlocks. There will not be too many that feature differing weapons. In those cases, perhaps a scenario-specific rule is a better reflection than a rules mechanic change for the whole set?

@Mike
Thanks 👌

@ Delbruck
I take it that the 3rd figure from the left is Front Rank and the 1st and 2nd are Warfare Miniatures? If so, WM are much smaller than I thought. I'm pretty sure they won't blend in with the larger Redoubt Indians.

Thanks for the photo. 👌

From left to right the figures are Dixon, Warfare, and Front Rank.
Yes, Redoubt and FR are much larger than Warfare.
