Argonor's 3D Antics
« on: April 03, 2017, 07:59:38 AM »
I am playing around with some basic shapes in 123D.

This is just a test model for a card deck holder, walls are too thin for a solid 3D print, I think, but if somebody with some 3D printing knowledge/experience sees this, I would like to know if this would be the best 'angle' to print it (one flat side against the bed, rest of the 'sides' as vertical as possible)?

Or would the flat side against the print bed be prone to warping?

It will be a while, until I can acquire a printer, but that does not mean I cannot start learning how to make my own stuff, right?  ;)

Here's a view of the test model as it is meant to be used.

The idea would be to design a card holder for each size of cards I use for games. Of course the sides of the 'box' could be rounded, adjusted to the size of the deck in question, etc.

print it with a flat base.

Like the one on top?

I have now made this, sized for X-Wing and/or Armada damage cards (with FFG Yellow sleeves), 2 mm thick 'walls', which I think should be sufficiently solid for this purpose.

Still very basic, but should do the job.

Print this one with its flat side on the base and it will come out lovely.

Thanks, both, it is designed with the flat backside 'on the grid' in 123D so it should be easy to drop on the printgrid in Cura or whatever.

I don't have a printer, yet, just recently began setting money aside for it (yes, theoretically, I could just buy it from my savings, but we have our eldest daughter's confirmation in May, and I think my wife might find it difficult to understand if I spend about £400 on what is essentially a grown man's toy right now  ::) ), but I took Scurv's advice to get 123D downloaded and installed before they pull the plug on it, did it this morning.

I just found that after merging the parts, I can now just 'smart scale' this design to fit other card/deck sizes! I think I'm coming down with a bad case of the 3D bug  lol

HUZZAH!

Here is what I would do with the power of hindsight and my own efforts.

Don't bother about making sure stuff is printable at this stage of the game. Instead just concentrate on learning to drive 123D. Pick either a robot or a steam tank and have a go at making it. Work to a plan or off a pic or your imagination or a combo of. Whatever is easier for you to do and just get stuck in. Either of those objects will use all the different tools or at least all of the most common ones and will teach you quite a bit.

Sounds like a plan.  :)

I think it is fun to figure out how to change and combine basic shapes into something completely different. As per the first pics I posted, I just played around with how to design the shapes needed to build a card deck holder, then after some trial and error put together the last one in almost no time (at least compared to the first one), because I now knew, exactly what to do in which order.

I think this is something everybody can learn how to do, but it will take some time and imagination to master. Let's just say, my appetite is whet, but I can't say if I have the talent to make something really interesting (luckily, I have plenty of stuff others have designed to get inspiration from).

I really wish I could justify getting a printer right away, but for reasons stated, I shall have to wait a bit. Well gives me more time to learn the ropes with 3D design.  :D

This has been a dormant project for more than a year, but I am now ready to take the plunge and order my first printer coming Monday!

It will be the Creality CR10S - S3

Exciting!
New printers always have some teething problems (well they do with me anyway) getting used to the system and the bed and all that. Anyway, people here are able to help sort issues so share your worries!

This one would not extrude - turned out to be a tiny screw on top of the extruder arm that had to be losened a bit.

I'm a happy bunny, right now!!!  ;D

So, to sum up the last week of 3D Antics:

Card shoes for Damage Cards for Armada and X-wing (FFG Yellow Sleeves, own design)

- unit card holders for Star Wars Legion

- card shoe for Sellswords & Spellslingers (tarot size, own design)

- Trap markers for Sellswords & Spellslingers (need some clean-up)

Not gaming-related

- a coin display stand for souvenir coins

 - and currently printing a spool holder tin insert for my wife's sewing machine spools (my own design).

The future is now!  ;)
