My Wife and I have what we call is "Hobby Night", this is one evening a week, Wednesday for us where we focus are evening after dinner to our hobbies and we do this in the same room with each other we have very small folding tables we set up we have "Work Trays" we use with our projects that we have already set up to start working on and just go from there.

So during the rest of the week I can pick what you want to work on and make sure during the week I make sure I have all the materials I need placed on the working tray, then it's just Table, Tray, Start. Much like my current project I have been posting about it's all set up on a tray, tools, glue and all.

Yes you could have a campaign game to use, this will help line up what you need or want to build next, very much like Cook suggested.
Just remember "If the Enemy is in range, so are YOU!

I would vote for more civies and NPCS to fill in the background - not everyone is a protagonist !

Hey, I really like your input, friends.

The way to structure one's creation/gaming to get some games going, instead of getting bogged down in building/painting, is great. Thank you Cook!

Finding a routine to actually get some hobbying done - while getting time with my wife - is an excellent idea, War Monkey!
Right about now, the kids are asleep around 20.30, we're getting up 5.40 every morning, so there's not much time to play with. By having dedicated hobby nights, I might get some more hobbying done, even if it's just one or two hours.

Metternich, I based four Crusty civilians this morning, prepping some armed and unarmed vacc suited miniatures, an unarmed alien and an adventurer. So it looks like there might be a little of everything coming up.

I try to do hobby work for an hour each night after the little one is in bed. I have a roll-top desk in the living room for my work desk, so I can sit there and paint or whatever while my wife watches tv or plays a game on the console. It’s worked out well for a few years now.

I've actually managed to get some hobbying done, in small increments.

Cleaned and glued some minis to bases while the children were watching tv.

Put on caulk on the bases and glued on sand while rewatching a movie with my wife and her niece.

Undercoating when I got a couple of minutes over.

Got more done in short time, than I've been able to do in over a month...

It’s surprising how much you can get done working on it a little bit at a time.

Yeah, I feel like my week of hobby time has largely been this kind of un-sexy work. Glue this, file that, smear texture paste on the other thing.

Well, I haven't been able to get any hobby time, but at least I've prepped another set of miniatures, so that I can start painting when I get time.

Got an amazing gift from my wife this Christmas, I didn't even know it existed:

Best Christmas gift by Oscar Falk, on Flickr

It's an awesome tool for fleshing out characters, adding stories and connections.

I've also got a new plan: instead of painting crews of five, I'm going to paint dyads or triads. I hope that this will make everything more manageable.

That is a very nice gift! I will need to find a copy for myself.

Doing a few figures at a time works too, I would love to sit all day and do nothing but paint figures. Yeah, Right, like that is ever going to happen  lol, but I have my tray set up and when we have our hobby night I can get a couple done, right now I'm waiting on some Brush on Primer to come in the mail so I can get some figures done, so I'm on hold until then, in the mean time I have been drawing up plans and sketches for some of my next few projects.

By the way you have a really Great Wife! Too think of a great gift like that!

That is a great gift. I've used the Universal NPC Emulator (UNE) which, I believe, can be found for free online. It just goes through a series of D100 rolls which generate some improv style words and then you work it into a story. I love the variety it creates in generating characters with all sorts of quirks. This book looks like it serves a similar function. Gotta love supportive wives!

The thing with this one is not that it's tables and tables of random content (even if one can roll for an idiom in the setting, or a weird prophecy), but it's full of little exercises to make characters (or groups) more, well... characterful? Vivid? Interesting?

Like posing questions like:

"If your nemesis is looking for you, how will she describe you to others? Which are your most defining charactetistics?"

"There's an item that you carry with you, even if it is of little use for you. What is that item? Something you once relied on that now is obsolete? Something you decided to learn to master, that you never got around to, where leaving the objects means a definitive end of that pursuit?"

"Your character risks her life by being out on adventures. When was the first time you were in mortal danger?"

...and so on!

Interesting... sounds like improv prompts. I will have to pick that up at some point. Sounds like a great read for creative types!

I finally gave myself time to paint, and I felt so brutally uninspired. I started painting a CP Models adventurer, but I didn't 'feel' the colours (I wanted him to lead my Colonial Defense Force, so I tried something that would work as a 'neutral' militia). I started to basecoat my Crusties, but also didn't feel like painting them. Then I tried to choose a colour scheme for a bounty hunter with a goblin/gretchin/malig sidekick, but my mind went into lockdown, so I couldn't decide.

Instead I decided to start to build my bounty hunter's starship:

Loads of detailing left to do (and a cockpit), but I like it!
