Friday night we had a build night, and I had planned to make a entry way for my 20mm Dragons teeth. Oh, how wrong I was......
4 Hours later, with many, many bricks, some scrap MDF and scrap foam, I had this:
(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1KypBIXHOz4/XHCkqdz-wyI/AAAAAAAAFvI/i8aXMO1LP2UugrKnnGVc3Uu5pAA6x94GQCLcBGAs/s1600/52474497_289602228345116_29755533426688000_n.jpg)
So, naturally, with the kids out of the house the next day, I did some more work. And added another bit of scrap MDF and foam.
By now I had realised this is seriously boring and mindnumbing work.
I don't think my Brain got the memo, as I pressed on even more on Sunday.....
...and added 2 more of the frigging things....
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5k3bTSTmjLs/XHL1B8z8G9I/AAAAAAAAFv8/EUHr3ltciiQ6Aor_8UCrfEu82qbQ804_ACLcBGAs/s1600/USER_SCOPED_TEMP_DATA_orca_share_media1551026854494.jpg)
As I can't work very fast atm, building these took me about 15+ hours. I was happy, they look nice, no idea how to paint them and I'll be damned what game I made them for. Thanks brain.
So...Monday comes, I drop off the kids at school, come back home, prep a lot more MDF offcuts for basing, and then start cuting more foam. A lot more foam. Turned the radio on, zoned out and went to work.

And this is as far as I got today.
I do not reccomend you do this. It is incredibly repetitious, boring to the extreme and you will question everything in life up to this point. Will look grand though when it is done :) . I think I will have to put in about 35 hours at my current speed to get it all done, and I've already made notes to add 2 more single based ruined colums so it can stretch 4 feet across, and playing with the idea of a ruined house on top of a ruined section of viaduct. Oh brain, why can't you just be like the rest....
-
They will look great when you are done, but yeah, that is a lot of time to pour into these.
-
you are clearly a glutton for punishment love it!
-
I’m disappointed you’re using white foam as a frame like that. I expected them to be blocks all the way through. lol lol
Those look incredible.
-
Looks great but can understand how boring this must be. You have done well, I would have done ten or so bricks and given up at that point.
-
Well, it may feel like punishment, but it looks amazing. Very nice results so far!
-
It looks fantastic! Just the look i am after.
Did you make the bricks yourself?
-
Looks great now, just think how fantastic it will be painted with figures playing around it.
I must admit I would have wimped out and (using an old Biro) impressed a brick pattern
directly onto the structures. I might even have done a few bits of brick & given the bulk
of it a coat of 'plaster' covering the worst bits with ivy etc. But that's me, lazy.
-
Your brain has a lot to answer for, most of it good! :D
Lovely work - keep going.
-
Thx guys. Yes, I make the bricks myself. With a proxxon foamcutter and a empty Pringles can with rough gravel in it its really easy to make loads rather quick.
Little progress today due to other commitments, but the original 4 set of walls now has the 2nd coat of dark grey Gesso and Modge Podge paint and is drying so I can start the basic stonework tomorrow night. Maybe.
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qb1Y3UnVEZY/XHVlmnc-g-I/AAAAAAAAFxM/j2rHKEjsan0vUDftxS9RbiFL-d2f_1QQwCLcBGAs/s1600/53034491_328659887756098_932183764962902016_n.jpg)
This gives it a nice strong and lasting basecoat to work with. The large span now has the first bits of brickwork as well.

I've decided to go all out, with a leasurely pace, for this project. And I always say, when in doubt how much you need.....double it. So I will look into my ready made box of pre sanded MDF for enough shapes to do another set of bridge/aquaduct parts so I will end up with 2 metres instead of the 1 metre I have now.
-
Cool 8)
-

I will give that a try, thanks.
-
I'm a glutton for punishment so expanded 1 metre of brickwork to....2.4 metres of brickwork. Jay.

Amazing work, man! I hope to see it painted soon.

Don't stop being a glutton!

Most beautiful madness :-* :-* :-*

great looking project!! keep going!!

Too many appointments today, so only a small windows to do anything, so drybrushing it is.

Basic stone is done, base is next, then adding washes for some extra colour, varnish, tufts and dusting and I must be clearly insane but what else is new......
-
It's a very good kind of insane though....we love it!
-
Ambitious and fantastic project- I love it!
-
Dat zie je niet aankomen.
Moet jij geen scheepjes schilderen?
Nice work!
-
All in all it's just a-nother brick in the wall...
Daring project, reminds me of your bunker project: Still thinking big after years you should have learnt better. On the other hand - who of us could... lol

That was 10 years ago, a younger man back than (with more working parts). The Bunker Project was a great idea, I was just lacking the required skill and motivation. Plus I have 4 more weeks to go till surgery so I want to get as much done as possible before they "fix" my hand and I should be a good 2-4 weeks out of action then.
Plus, this bit of scenery works for sooooo many more settings.....
-
Plus, this bit of scenery works for sooooo many more settings.....
I'd buy it. The bunker was gone before I could get it... lol
-
Outstanding! Immediately made me think of the aqueduct in Segovia in Spain - except of course that the one in Segovia isn't in ruins! I love the modularity of this build - a lot of work, but it will definitely be worth it. The painted ruin pieces look wonderful - I can hardly wait to see them completely finished!
Best of luck with your surgery - I hope all goes well.
-
You sir are amazing, wish you well with the surgery, but don't ever let them try and cure your madness, its fine as is.
:D
-
Thx Lads. Michi, Erik (Modhail) has it now and with Crayne we are trying to make a Deep Space Hulk Salvage sort of a game.
Progress for today, 4 ruined walls have had a lost of washes to change the tones of the rock, and the primer for the sand has been apllied.
Also, I think I can finish off these 2 ruined supports tomorrow and get them ready for priming when it has all set properly.

-
Put snow on them and start playing Frostgrave!
I knew that Erik has it...
-
I love these, they look great, keep up the good work sir!
-
Hell no, no snow. Would be odd using these in Cambodja covered in snow....
The 2 ruined columns are pretty much done, another coat of thinned glue/water/detergent mix tonight to make the sand really rock hard, and basecoating them sundsy evening, I hope. The 4 wall ruins are now finished base wise so will get varnished tomorrow, then tufts and dust and it is done. Also, I found a Buddah for the 50 cent challenge that I'm basing in the same way.

They look amazing! Id never have the patience for that.

They look amazing! Id never have the patience for that.
Patience is about the only virtue I have! lol
As my hands are severely cramped up after basecoating the 2 ruins and the buddah (again) and some tombs, I'm keeping this short.
What I did today, all day.

Shoot that looks nice! All of it, but that building you are working on looks really cool already!
-
Excited to see more of the wood framed building. Once the hands are rested of course!
-
No bricklaying today, but the 4 walls have had 2 coats of varnish, and the 2 ruined supports are now ready for the final bits of highlighting of the sand. Buddah got painted and weathered as well so he's also up for some varnish. Did 2 little mausoleums as well.

Looking good. Very ambitious projects there. Wish I could find the time to do some terrain, painting commissions have been eating every waking hour lately.
-
Great stuff :)
-
They look the business, well worth the effort of all those individual bricks
-
Looking good...the walls remind me of Labyrinth so was half expecting to see a little blue worm on one of the bricks :D
-
It's a hell of a work, but it certainly pays off. Wonderful results
-
Ran out of blocks, cut new blocks, painted moss. That was my evening....

-
After cutting all those blocks do you find yourself cutting them at night? :D
Part of me thinks cutting them all would be dull but the Aspie part of me thinks the repeated task is quite appealing...especially when you look down to see a box full.
-
Always nice to see a fellow Aspie :D
No, I just cut off a strip of my huge size of foam, and compeletely strip that bit down into blocks and then I'm done. Actually glueing them on is the boring and repetative bit but even that I've managed to speed up a bit. And yes, you can do that well into the night and I really :D
-
:D
Boring or no sir they look amazing.
-
Looks great, but what kind of cutter do you use to cut those bricks so tidy, and how you you then make them so 'rocky' looking?
If that blue foam is the same stuff we have over here, I've heard the smoke from heating/cutting is very toxic, so I am hoping you ventilate well? :)
-

Standard Proxxon Foam Cutting Table, though I'm going to buy a foot pedal for it to speed up things and make it easier on my hands.
Same blue foam stuff as you have. All smoke is toxic, and if you are getting a lot of smoke you've set it too high. But yes, I use it in a ventilated area and never work on it for too long....not that my hands will let me anyway.

I'm amazed how fast I can churn out new scenery atm, even with my ...hand (haha) icaps.
Start with a block of styrofoam and a bit of MDF. Cough loudly once while waving hands in a magical manner.

Second sealcoat tomorrow, then 2 coats of base and I'll get to start to paint it maybe sunday eveingish...
Same for the wall, and the mini Me.

Oh right, I probably have the same machine gathering dust over there... hm. lol

The machine as is....isn't so good. The guide rail is just cheap crap. I replaced mine with one from Shifting Lands and that makes the device great. Now I just need a dome cutter as well, and a foot pedal, so I can increase productivity even more.
-
Great end result :)
-
Envious of your work rate...and patience...not sure I’d cut individual bricks, but the end result is very impressive
8)
-
Your work is more than impressive. I love the way you are building all these.
-
Well all in all it´s just a ...very well executed terrain. Nice work, keep it up.
-
Superb work my friend.
Might I suggest a texture roller ? To add further detail .

Amazing and very inspiring job! Congrats!

The finished ruins look fantastic.
Well done.

Thx guys :)
Superb work my friend.

You might want to clarify this, cause I have no idea what you mean?
-
No problem mate,
Look up Green Stuff World texture rollers.
Though these are designed for putty they can be used on foam. The down side is that you need to use some force to press the detail into foam.

Ah those. The results I've seen are rather mediocre at best as they are simply not cut deep enough to work properly on foam, even with a lot of pressure. I've been looking into them for making Stalingrad ruins and the commercially available stuff, right now, does not cut it. But I'm waiting for a few releases over the summer that should do the trick as those are designed from the ground up to work with foam....as there is no way in hell I want to do individual 20mm scaled brickwork from the ground up. I'm not that mental.
-
New stuff from Green stuff world? Didn't know that .. good to know, thanks.
Of course you'd be mental to do that.... hold on , we're gamers .. we're all mental already ;).
But you could make some from putty or card or plaster of paris + white cement or some other material & stick them on.
Here are some ideas which you might find useful

No, not from Greenstuff World, not that I know of anyway. Other, smaller companies I talk to, but those are still trials and may not even be released.
Yeah, drawing and pushing a pencil etc over foam doesn't work for me, any downward pressure on my wrists is a big nono, and I can barely hold a pen for a minute or so, so this too would take forever. For my high fantasy stuff I prefer the loose block on a styrofoam core method. Lightweight, quick to build, can work till I am too tired. But lots more in the pipeline.

And the next lot of ruined bits is underway....with a few experiments.

That latest archway must be one of your best works yet.
Love the way you did the stones for the arch, you fitted them like clockwork.
Keep it up
