A common way of doing corn as in "maize" fields is to use pieces from the green artificial christmas trees.
With the wire trunk and green leaves they work a treat.
Wargamers do it on a table.

A really good idea. I like and use those aquatic plants already, but to have a way to be able to get into the fields without having rows too far apart to look realistic is a great idea.
