Title: *UPDATED 11/04* Defending Deutschland- Iain's Big 20mm BAOR '86 Project
Post by: Iain R on February 10, 2021, 05:18:33 PM
The project that got me into Cold War gaming back in about 2010(?) Stumbling across an obscure manufacturer called "Elhiem", who had a single pack of patrolling infantry, while looking for 1/72 Cold War Brits for diorama purposes, which then in turn led me to The Guild... and the rest is history.

A battlegroup based around a fictional TA unit, The Queens Own Atholl Rangers (mainly so I can include weird, esoteric chanky old shite that would otherwise be out of place...)

First up, SUNRAY MAJOR, the BG commander, resplendent in majestic tour 'tache and Barbour jacket, accompanied by the RSM ("No, sir. 3rd Shock Army are THAT WAY..."), an infantry officer, armour officer, and a somewhat non-descript, if ally, gentleman in DILAC hat, para smock and tropical trousers...

Pack of Embassy Regals and Iranian Mars Bar added to the map table in a fit of enthusiasm and paint fumes.

Disclaimer- I am not and never have been a soldier, this is just my fictional Cold War as viewed through the rose-tinted glasses of the ARRSE Forum and recollections of friends... :D

FOXHOUND (Infantry) platoon HQ. 10 years after the fact, these look a bit grim up close!   :?

"A" Section. These were my first "20mm" wargames figures... nice to see I've come on a bit in the last 10 years!

Same am I, I've just finished my BAOR project, with the some of the same figures. They don't look as good as Iain's though.

Very kind, gents, thanks!

"B" Section. Bit of an improvement over the first section, and the guy standing firing the '66 shows off the nice difference between the standard DPM, and the "trops" I've painted a few of the guys' trousers as, just to stop them becoming a big blob of dull green. I am also a massive fan of the light role GPMG pack, a great little piece!

STARLIGHT elements ("medical" to everyone else...)

1/76 JB Models plastic kits. The Saracen is a conversion from the standard APC, and would have been a rare sight indeed outside of Ulster by this time, but having seen a photo of obe on Crusader '80, that was good enough for me. Really chuffed with how these came out...

MILAN ATGM team. Will need to get the finger out and do the second one at some point (and yet another bloody 432 for them to trundle about in...)

Cracking work!  :D

Your paint jobs are lovely and clean, but I feel it's the basing that really sets them off  :)

Oddly, the basing is something I'm not that happy with. If it wasn't for the work involved (particularly with things like weapon teams) I'd redo it!

SHELDRAKE (Artillery)

Forward Observation Officer and his jalopy. Quite pleased with the little FOO vignette.

Figure by Elhiem, Ferret Scout Car by S&S. I may change this for a turretless version at some point, and relegate this to convoy escort duty with the Scarsdale Yeomanry (the recce element of the 1 ATHOLL Battlegroup...)

That's a great paintjob, the decals and the way you do the lenses on the lights are the perfect finishing touches.

Awesome stuff, just about to start a 15mm project for the late 70s/early 80s myself
Can you tell me what paints you used for the vehicles? They look exactly how I would like mine to look

Humbrol 86 for the green, 33 for the black.

Another oddball in an armoured formation, the CVR(W) Fox armoured car. Will probably fudge it that it's a scratch battlegroup made up of whatever was available, the recce element in this case being another TA regiment, the Scarsdale Yeomanry, equipped with Fox/Ferret A/Cs... which means I can possibly justify a few "Dougal" Lannies flung into the mix too...

I need to go back and add smoke dischargers and possibly a callsign to the turret, and might even go as far as a turned brass RARDEN...

Well after many moons I'm finally back on this again. I was actually getting ready to restart this time last year, bit then real life events unfolded, and it all just seemed a bit... facetious.

However, here we are again (creeping back in via SPECTRE '86) . I've acquired the oomph to get this particular stash queen brought to its long-overdue conclusion. So, decals on and varnished now, and ready for the (admittedly rarely used) ground anchor to be mounted, and then for basing.

I have of course had The Demolition Guard on repeat on YT for inspiration.

Sadly, not much like a real CET, it does not look broken down!!

Oddly enough, my colleague, who's ex-armoured engineers, said the same!

Well this thread is a treat! I was just browsing around and stumbled upon your work which is just excellent. I have been bitten by the 20mm bug and was just about to order some helicoptor pilots from Elhiem-now I may just have to explore their catalogue a little more. Humbrol 86 seems to be an excellent choice which I will be be copying! Please do continue to post as this is fascinating.

Cheers Ulverston! I definitely hold that Elhiem's BAOR are the best out there. There's even a pack of Toms having a brew!

Another piece finished-

HOLDFAST- FV180 Combat Engineer Tractor. S&S Models piece, finally free of the stash of shame. I broke with tradition and didn't glue it to its base, as I like the idea of a game using it as an ersatz ARV to keep a bridge clear of wrecks, and it would look a bit silly on a tarmac bridge with its own little patch of moorland.

Also, I managed to glue the bucket on squint, so painted the a fluid leak on the corresponding ram to cover my stupidity...

A few years down the line, on the 1800 daily brief at 7 Armd Bde on Telic 1 the last statement was always from CO 32 Engr Regt telling us how far his Chieftain AVLBs had managed to move under their own steam that day!

Oddly enough, it was 32 he was in, I'm sure. Was certainly AVLBs he crewed, albeit back in the early 90s.

I'd forgotten we still had the Chieftain platform chuntering about as late as that...

Pretty sure we still have almost as vintage Leopard Bibers in service over here.

I'm very impressed by a man who takes the trouble to model the supporting arms. Even if engineers are just larcenous bastards with weird sexual tastes.  lol

I have an AVRE to scratch build at some point for the very same Demolition Guard scenario.
